Attendances there are down, however a lot of the running and openings are subsidised, or paid for by betting companies who need races and events for people to bet on. Having worked there many years ago, and still have family employed there who've been there literally decades, the numbers are obviously nowhere near what they were attendance wise, but there are other streams of income that weren't there before.
They should open it up to other dogs. Different classes/breeds. The Cavapoo Stakes, that kind of thing.

Like someone said that land must be worth an absolute fortune. They do various entertainment evenings there, when the dogs aren't running; things like Take That tribute bands and such.

Portslade Panelworks just down by the Kwikfit had planing permission for a storey block of flats recently. Think the council loves the flats as usually occupied by young professionals who don't use any/many council services other than the bins/recycling but pay hefty council tax.

So Hove is really going to the dogs. Or in this case.......................NOT going to the dogs.

Haven’t been Greyhound racing for years. In the late 80s/early 90s I was there most weeks.Someone mentioned Ballyregan Bob, I saw a lot of his victories including the epic record breaking (32nd) one at Hove I was also a Jack Albion equivalent going to countless “away days” almost all of the tracks I visited have been demolished now.
I’ll probably pay one last visit to Hove as it’ll be “when” not “if” the bulldozers are coming

Was my "second home" in the late 80's, early 90's when I was in my early 20's. A group of us invested in a greyhound, trained by the legendary Bill Masters (Gin and Tonic Bill and what wins tonight?)

First dog we bought was absolutely hopeless - after 3 runs, Bill with G&T in hand just says "don't worry lads, I'll get you another one". Sure enough he stands by his word and we had a lot of fun with a bitch for a few years who actually won her first 2 starts (Sidney Starr hated us on the 2nd occasion lol) Funnily enough the dog reappeared at Catford a couple of weeks later, won at 8-1 and was never seen or heard of again.....

......them were the days!

Used to go lots in the 80's and 90's. There and the horses at Plumpton had a down to earth charm about them.
Still go to the dogs a couple of times a year as a group for a meal. Given the price point, the food is pretty good in my experience.

I Used to like it because it was, almost uniquely, a turf course and now it's all sand. Easier to maintain and safer for the dogs but it's lost some of its charm.

Yeah, add me to the list of people who used to love a night at the dogs but haven't been for years. Just worked it out and it's about twelve! 😲 Didn't realise it was that long. Used to go loads back in 'the day'.

My brother was a big dog racing fan. He was whatever the dog-racing world equivalent of a 'groundhopper' is. (A 'trackhopper'?) I remember him saying sadly a few years ago that nearly all the tracks he'd visited were now closed.

It isn't obviously nearly as big a sport as it used to be. A Fun Fact for you: at the 1966 World Cup all the matches in Group A (England's group) were scheduled to be played at Wembley, however the game between Uruguay and France was played at White City. The reason? It was scheduled for a Friday night, and Friday night was Wembley Stadium's dog racing night, and World Cup or not nothing took priority over dog racing.
And sadly nearly 60 years later there are no dog tracks left in any borough in Greater London, which probably says as much about land prices in the capital than the sport.

I’m sure I read somewhere (a while ago) that the land at HGS is owned by the Council and is protected to prevent development. Understand the demolition of Corals Gym was done without permission and retrospective permission has been applied for. Can’t see that area and car park staying empty for long with this Govt.

Similarly not been for years. A lot of fun nights there though. In March 2003 my girlfriend (now wife) drunkenly put a fiver on some random unlikely combination that got her laughed at by a bloke who told her she didn’t know what she was doing (true) and should leave gambling to those who understood it (unnecessarily patronising and rude). Of course the bet came in - the winnings paid for us to spend a cheap weekend in Rome a couple of weeks later (I know the date because we were there when the huge Iraq war protest took place in London!)

When I lived in Edgeware in 81 I would go down to Wembley for the dogs on occasion with my pal Nils who was a keen gambler (he has played cards with Tony Bloom and financed his flat in Dulwich on the back of a big win).

It was an absolute shit hole.

The bar sold shitty beer in plastic which we drank sitting at a formica-topped table while smoking Rothmans.
Well I was probably smoking roll ups.

Wembley was a dump.
I had been in the 70s to watch a WC qualifier (in the Tomaszewski 'clown' debacle qualifier series) along with 30,000 disinterested wastrels when English football was at the opposite of its zenith.

And people complain about progress?
Cah!

There was an NSC dog owning syndicate a few years ago. I joined for a while until I had cash flow issues. Wonder if it’s still going.

In the very early 70s, the pavilion over the other side (where Alliance and Leicester were), was the only place a 13 year old from Mile Oak could be GUARANTEED to be served. Yeah honestly, i'm eighteen mister, two pints of lager and lime.

I think it was the drape jacket that swung it

Good good.

These animal sports have no place in the modern world.

Hopefully Hove dogs will close soon as well, and become something better for the community (Albion Ladies stadium?).

Chances are it'll just become flats though, giant flats, to further congest the city.
