Horses .... what's the point?

Now first of all let me get this straight ... I don't mind horses out in the American West where they should be, being ridden by cowboys .... BUT

What's the effing point of them in this country?

Where I live I'm bloody surrounded by them.

One of my pastimes is walking, mostly along footpaths in the countryside ... everywhere you walk, more horses.

Driving along roads and country lanes in Sussex ... what do you get stuck behind? Bloody horse boxes driving along at twelve miles an hour. Where the hell are they all going? If you've got to have a bloody horse leave it in a field, don't stuff it in a horse box and drive it around. I'm told they're not big on sightseeing.

And if it's not horses in horse boxes on the road it's bloody horse riders on the road. And if you don't slow down to about three mph to pass them they wave their fists at you.

And all the horse riders wandering around the lanes are female. All the top show-jumpers and just about all the jockeys are men. So why are there no boys trotting along the effing lanes?

And the cost of the bloody things ... the cost of the horse, the stable, the food, the horse box, the vets fees. There must be an awful lot of people in Sussex with a lot more money than sense. People who can afford all that stuff should be taxed to the hilt so my taxes can be reduced. Double the tax on horses, horse boxes, horse food, tack (or whatever they call the harness stuff) and anything else remotely connected with horses immediately.

The people in the house behind me have a square fenced off piece of ground (sand school?) where just about every day some bloody loser of a person rides this nag up and down, then diagonally, then up and down, then down and up, then diagonally, then up and down, then diagonally ... get the idea ... and it goes on and bloody on ... can there be a more boring way to spend your time? Sorry, I forgot, probably watching paint dry ... but it would be a close run thing.

Now they've applied for permission to have a "horse exerciser" erected. I had no idea what it was so I called the Planning Dept ... apparently it's like a hamster wheel on it's side. But electrically operated! So you put the bloody horses in this thing, turn on the switch, and they have to walk round and round in circles. So you've got a horse, right? Presumably because for some godforsaken reason you want to get up on the bloody thing's back and ride it? So then you buy a hamster wheel thingy so you don't have to ride your horse, but instead make it walk round and round and round and round in circles inside the thing so it gets exercise.

AM I MISSING SOMETHING???

OK, rant over.

You're quite right, I've never got the point of horse riding in this day and age.

Do I drive my car down Bridleways?

And yet they expect us to go out of our way to avoid them when they're clogging up our roads (that we have to pay for). Funny, I've never seen a horse with a tax disc, so why exactly should I have to suffer the irritation involved in getting stuck behind one of these lumbering bastards, forced to turn my stereo down and pass wide and slow when there's a gap.

Listen darling, if your horse doesn't like listening to banging drum n bass as I shoot by at 60mph, keep it off our f***ing roads. You know you've got a Land Rover back at home anyway

Horses do have some point.

Ever eaten one?

Taste superb. Why anyone would want to ride one is beyond me, but as far as food goes........:drink:

If you follow Uncle Spielberg's racing tips, horses have no point whatsoever :nono:

My household supports two and a half horses (my sons is a half share). The wifes horse costs about £400 for part livery, my daughters £350 for working livery and my sons half that. We have a Disco to pull a horse trailer (£3000) and pay 2.5 * £40 every six weeks for shoes. Insurance is £20 per month each animal and then you can start riding after you have got saddles, numnahs, bridles, bits, etc. That costs nearly as much as a half decent footballers cocaine habit. You can spend much more if you want and lessons aren't included in the figures above.

So, they are quite costly. But, they bring a great deal of pleasure and happiness, don't make much noise and yield a huge ammount of manure for the garden. Although my son is only young, I'm sure that he will learn to appreciate the benefits of doing a mostly female activity as he gets older.

Goldstone, if you don't like being surrounded by them then why don't you move and stop moaning. You sound like one of those Falmer residents.

Living in what is effectively a suburb of a city but entirely surrounded by stud farms, people riding horses on roads is one of the most annoying things possible

I don't care about people riding them off the road, their horse, their land, their business. But, on public roads - ban them.

I'm fed up from being stuck behind little girls on their horses on the N4, or having to pressure wash horse shit from my wheel arches -every single fecking weekend-

Oh, and them complaining when you go "too fast", or "too loud" (my car has a turbo, been shouted at about that). I pay road tax - €328 a year - to use the roads, and insane fuel taxes. A horse doesn't pay road tax or fuel duty.

Horse boxes....arrrrrggggghhhhh:angry:

Horses with little Jemimas and Felicities clogging up an already narrow road...aaaarrrrgggghhhh:angry: off to the fecking glue factory the lot of you. Get in line behind Uncle Spielberg's tips....

Did I say 'Horse Boxes...aaaaarrrrggggghhh:angry: '?

I sell petrochemicals to a few guys who 'service' horse boxes. They all say that they are told by most owners 'to do as little as possible for as little as possible to get it through the MOT'. Brakes are within limits but should be dealt with-'Not this time, maybe next year if it fails the test'.

Oi you twats-I'm in mortal danger with your shitbox vehicles running around barely legal:angry:

I don't own a horse, far too expensive. But there are very few pleasures to beat riding through the Sussex countryside, the walking on roads is the boring part, it's when you can stretch to a canter that you really start flying (well, not literally): I love it.

And I like watching horses being ridden, so what if it slows people down - does it really matter if you arrive a minute or two late. People are always in too much of a hurry these days.

I reckon the point about willies was bang on - a spot of jealousy methinks.

Roads were made for horses. They were using them long before the internal combustion engine was invented.

That is just tosh

Our "main" road system follows roads laid down by the Romans. These "roads" were built mainly in long straight lines between the towns and ports to get the marching armies around the country. Farmers never build roads, they used flat areas to drive their sheep and cattle to market, over time these tracks became worn and compacted and when the horse drawn carriage and mail coaches were invented, these were converted to use. In the Industrial revolution, the mill owners and industrialisst needed to get their wares to the ports and local inventors like Maccadam invented tarmac to lay accross the tracks to stop them becoming bogs following rain.

Much in the same way as the Nazi party had miles and miles of autobahn's built so they could get their mechanised troop divisions to somewhere very quickly.

A centurian was a soldier of the hundreth part....soldiers never rode horses, the officers rode horses.

If you read Gibbon, there is great weight put on the fact that when roads were built, due to the lack of suitable building material in the south of brittania ( ie for watling Street ( Dover to London) there was constant bitching by the local engineers that horses were destroying the road surfaces, and soldiers were ending up with broken ancles and legs where they kept falling over broken slabs

( you may have gathered you have stumbled upon a subject I know a little about)
