Horse blankets. Why?

Do you see cows in the fields with blankets?

Pigs with blankets?

No.

Sheep ... well I guess they have their own woolly coats.

But my question is, why do people feel the need to cover their horses with blankets?

I am surrounded with bloody horses where I live and they've all got bloody blankets on. Can't figure it out.

I am sure that the great minds at NSC have the answer.

If they have been clipped they need a rug on. Just like if you had all your hair shaved off you'd wear a hat!

Because horses have been selectively bred for hundreds of years for speed, athleticism, strength etc.. rather than wooly coats and their ability to resist the cold and damp.

lots of different reasons. It protects their coat if you are showing them and keeps their hair short

and it stops saddles rubbing

oh and keeps them dry and warm

mmm, pigs in blankets, one of the few festive treats I particularly enjoy. Especially dipped in some English Mustard.

Horses are "clipped" (shaved) in the colder months to stop them overheating when being ridden.

To compensate for the lack of hair and to stop the horse getting cold when not being ridden ie. grazing out in the field owners put rugs on the horse.

Just for fun....here's a picture of my horses with thier rugs on hahahaha:cool:

I'm impressed that so many NSCers have all this horsey knowledge.

So I guess if you had a cow that you showed at agricultural fairs and you clipped it's coat, you would need a cow blanket?

Not true 'cos lots of bald people or shaven headed guys don't wear hats in winter.

At least Desert Orchid can now be warmed up in a big SAUCEPAN - NOT with a blanket. Which is nice and somehow comforting.
