Horse blankets. Why?

There's a good reason for horses needing coats and blankets. But most dogs don't!

Only someone looked down at my perfectly warm terrier today and said "Awww, hasn't the little chap got a nice warm coat?" To which the answer is, yes, of course he has. Even after sharing plenty of it with the sitting room carpet.

He's a Irish Draught x Thoroughbread.

Do you hunt Bry?

No. I would do - but he's not mine. On my days off I exercise horses for people too busy to do it themselves. Have about 4 that I ride at the moment. Great way to unwind away from the job.

Did go shooting today though, and have a brace of plump pheasant hanging outside the back door. I've christened them 'Ant and Dec', because somehow that makes slicing them open and scooping out their inards always seem less of a chore.

He looks fantastic. What is he? I'm riding an Irish Hunter at the moment (well, not at this very moment, but you know what I mean).

Wouldn't have thought he would be much use in the fire brigade, could just imagine the horse helping put out the fires:lolol:

Do you hunt Starry? not something ive ever talked about on here what with people being so opinionated and all that.:bla:

we used to ride out with the rutland a good few years ago.

i dont have so much time now, but try to get out a few times a year. my wife rides out nearly every week and the children hunt as well. usually with the royal artillery, hampshire hunt or hursley hambledon. but on occassion mendip farmers or the tedworth. depends who is where and things. we live on the border of several meets so don't have a true 'home' hunt.

the wife and children will be with the hampshire hunt on boxing day i think they are meeting at herriad. i will be at the football, but it's usually a good meet that one.

Reminds me of the time, a while back, when the bloke downstairs asked me if I fancied a pheasant for Xmas. He was a game-keeper by trade. Or possibly a poacher. I didn't like to enquire too closely, y'understand, as he had a GUN and patently knew how to use it. Also a bit of a mad glint in the eye, has to be said. So, anyway, couple of days before Xmas I get the knock on the door. And its not what I was expecting at ALL. Was sort of expecting a trussed-up turkey-like thing ready to stick in the oven. Not that I'd have even known what to do with it even then, mind, apart from turning the heat up for an arbitrary number of minutes and hoping for the best. Was not at ALL expecting something with a head and eyes and shotgun pellets

Think that was the year I started having pizza for me Xmas meal.

Pheasant casserole? I hope you didn't turn that lovely gift down TH?

Btw, don't worry about plucking pheasant - a quick slit down the back and peel the skin off wholesale. Clip the claws off too, as the pelt then slips off completely over the stumps. If it wasn't already gutted, they don't have much more innards than a fairly large sized fish - and you could feed that to the cat.

Can't believe my thread about horse blankets turned into questions about what effing hunt we think our wives and effing kiddies might be "riding out with" on Boxing Day.

You bastards! Leave the foxes alone.

This thread is purely about horse blankets. I have my answer. This thread is therefore officially closed!

i will call a truce when they quit killing my kids easter lambs. until then, they will be shot, snared and chased out.

Shot, snared or chased out are fine. I agree their numbers have to be kept down.

What is not acceptable is people having fun chasing and killing animals of any kind.

Have you ever killed a wasp or a spider?

Pay attention.

Yes, of course I've killed wasps and spiders, but I get no enjoyment out of it. I don't chase them for fun. Or make a day out of it.

What I object to, as I made quite clear, is people gaining enjoyment (or "sport" as it is called) from killing things.
