You do remember what happened at Charlie Hebdo?
Yes and I remember being almost blown up by the IRA in the 90s but that's another story.

Not sure what you mean by "risk", but lone individuals who decide to do something horrific (as many above have mentioned) are very very difficult for the security services to head off.

So what is the answer ? I don't think there is one unfortunately, not a practical one.

Well the problem is that this very possibly is a “copycat nutter”, they’ve seen how effective these types of attacks are at killing as many people as possible, with little cost or preparation. These attacks keep happening.
I was in London yesterday for a late afternoon business lunch near Spitalfields. We went for a drink afterwards and the pubs were rammed, with some ten deep on the pavements outside. So many people vulnerable to the whim of a madman. The tubes back to Waterloo were similarly packed. I can’t fathom how our security forces can protect us from occurrences like this.

There is a bad lot out there, apparently serving under and islamist flag.

The security services can map organizations.

Lone wolves are a problem.

There are obvious solutions but these are problematic for obvious reasons (e.g., that we don't inter people for their religion).

I suspect we may have to suck it up. There are other cause of needless death that carry far more numbers, and we barely blink about this due to their nature.

I remember my old Dad saying towards the end of his 86 years that he wanted nothing more to do with this world many times and with ever increasing anger and disappointment , tragedies like this make me appreciate what he meant . And a happy Christmas to those poor souls

They can't, not 100% and you just have to sort of live with it.

Nobody really expected the IRA to target Warrington when I lived there, particularly with the large percentage of people with Irish descent (at least) who lived there, but they did.

The only thing which keeps the vast majority of these types of attacks being stopped is, despite the press narrative, these so-called lone wolves gravitate towards the same processes of indoctrination. The same (compromised) Telegram and WhatsApp groups, the same IP logged Europol/CIA/MI6/NCA honeytrap websites on both the clear and dark web.

I read a very interesting article a few years back discussing traits of radicalisation, and how validation and reassurance is the number one defining trait which leads to capture. Once they go off-grid, the security agencies have no means of tracking them or ever knowing about them in the first place.

Mate, as we get older we have to try to be resolute and circumspect.

We humans are a mad lot. We are creative, mad, unpredictable, and then we die.

If we can live a good life among all that, contribute to the greater good, or at lease raise a good family, or a good nexus of those we have influenced, that's the best we can do. And so be it.

I don't think that's in doubt, I was simply saying that it's very difficult to identify the lone wolves of any radical persuasion.

What you can't clearly do, is identify everyone of a particular religion or heritage as a potential risk. We didn't for instance deport all the Irish when the IRA were letting off their bombs.

What can be done? Well British security forces seem to be pretty good, touch wood, at detecting plots/ideas even of lone wolf attackers. Thousands of experts/linguists sit at Cheltenham examining the musings, viewing and downloading by Islamist and right wing loons.

Societies/establishment imho also need to stop kowtowing to the aggressive revisionism and Islamism trying to tell the country and other countries how they should act/think. I was listening to a phone in on LBC with definitely not right wing Shelagh Fogarty, discussing the Assad’s evil. Mohamad called in from somewhere in the UK, furious that she had the cheek to focus on that with no evidence and why was it even a discussion? Mohamed blamed all the evils in Syria on the West, saying it was Islamophobic for anyone to criticise the Assad’s. He was rightly challenged.

WTF.

But thank you for highlighting my "desperation" about the IRA, one day we may meet and tell you what I personally experienced.

I try to draw parallels from experience. The threat now is clearly from radical Islam, but in the past is from something quite different.

We can always learn from the past.
