6 people died today. Bit crap of some people on this thread to be trying to make cheap racist capital out of it IMHO.

IMHO as well. It will not stop the right wing taking advantage of any news story to get their point across.

BBC News now saying people who died were from Brighton :nono:

Yes, 5 of the dead confirmed as being from Brighton and returning home from a Stag weekend.
6th fatal casualty was the driver of the recovery vehicle.

Lorry driver is being questioned, but only as a witness. From the pictures I have seen it looks as though the AA recovery vehicle crashed into the back of the lorry.

RIP

Hard to imagine how a vehicle running into the back of another moving vehicle could cause such carnage.

Bloody terrible thing to happen regardless of who was at fault.

M25 victims were on stag weekend
M25 crash scene
It took more than an hour to free the injured man from the wreckage
Five of the people who died in one of the worst crashes on the M25 in 20 years had been on a stag weekend in Leicestershire and were from Brighton.

The sixth person to die was a 46-year-old recovery driver from Rugby, Surrey Police said.

All six had been in the cab of a recovery truck after their minibus broke down on the London orbital road.

The truck was in collision with a lorry in the early hours of Monday on the anti-clockwise carriageway in Surrey.

Surrey Police said one of the occupants called the AA after the minibus broke down at Junction 18 on the M1.

Truck 'set up safely'

Seven people were picked up and returned safely to Brighton by one recovery vehicle from Dunchurch Motors Ltd.

The minibus was put on a second recovery vehicle and six members of the stag party travelled in the cab with the driver.

The five Brighton men who died were aged between 25 and 30, police said.

The groom was not involved in the crash.

One surviving person was taken to East Surrey Hospital in Redhill with a broken leg and face injuries - it took ambulance crews an hour to free him from the wreckage.

He is now in a stable condition.

Surrey Police has confirmed that the recovery vehicle was set up safely to seat seven people - one driver and six passengers - with proper seat belts.

"This cab was configured to seat two passengers in front with a driver and four passengers behind," a spokeswoman said.

Map

The crash happened at about 0215 BST between junctions nine and eight, near Reigate.

The motorway was closed for several hours but reopened just after 1100 BST.

The cab of the recovery vehicle was completely destroyed in the accident, which left wreckage strewn across both carriageways.

The lorry driver was unhurt and is being treated as a witness by police.

Ch Supt Rob Price said: "Our thoughts are with the families and friends of the six people who died in this tragic crash.

"This is one of the worst collisions Surrey Police have dealt with on the M25."

Police have said it is too early to confirm the cause of the crash which is under investigation.

Dunchurch Motors Ltd, who are based in Rugby, issued a statement which said: "This is a terrible tragedy. We are trying to come to terms with this ourselves.

Our thoughts are with the family of our driver and the families of those affected by this tragic incident."

They said they could not comment further while the investigation was ongoing.

Police expect to identify the people who died on Tuesday.

If they hit the lorry at 70mph this would be bad enough, but the recovered vehicle on the back would also be moving at 70mph and would probably come through the cab.

Like everybody else, I have no idea what caused this collision. Could have been a burst tyre, driver error, heatt attack or any one of number of things, and that will come out in the investiagtion.

However, I have almost lost count of the number of fatal accidents I have attended on the M11 / M25 where a stationery vehicle on the hard shoulder has been struck from behind - usually, but certainly not always in the early hours of the morning.

One of the most gutting was cutting an entire family out of their car (father / mother / son / uncle / dog) - all deceased- after a 38 tonne HGV had driven straight over the top of them at 50mph, after they had broken down.

All I would say, is if you are ever unfortunate enough to break down on a motorway NEVER, EVER stay in your vehicle - no matter how bad the weather, or how tempting it may be. Get everybody out, get right up the embankment and stay a good 50 - 100 metres to the rear of your car.

Or the opposite who condemn the right wing BOF and it could go on for ever, so how about a bit of mutual respect for the dead of this tragic accident? R.I.P people.

Indeed. RIP

From the shots on TV it looks as though the recovery van ploughed straight into the back of the lorry in the slow lane and got crushed underneath the container. Very sad.

Formal identification will take place on Tuesday aparrently.
Thoughts tonight with the loved ones of the deceased, who will spend all night looking at the front door, praying for it to open - but knowing in reality that it won't.

Rest in peace.

Is there a date for this and is there much difference with the digital one?The reason i'm asking was that i was going to do a two day course on tachos and other things which you get a certificate for.I might hold out for the digital one if it's coming out very soon.
All new trucks that are made now, have to be fitted with digi tacho's,
I use one now and have no problems with it, I think it's a great idea as it will stop all these drivers who currently drive "bent" ie using their charts as frisbees. A lot easier to use too, no filling in charts each day just stick your card and job done. My Trucks whole dash board flashes at me to warn that I need a break :lolol:
