Fairly last minute, we’re currently in Oslo. Never been to Norway before, loving it.

-10c by day, boy it’s cold.

Covid: For us, it was well worth jumping the hurdles. It’s only advisory to wear a face covering indoors in Norway, but literally 100% of people do.

At that temperature I’d by wearing one outdoors :moo:

hmmm supposed to be going to Michigan on the 23rd Dec and then flying on the 27th Dec to Arizona for just over a week.
The wife and daughter both Americans will be alright, but does anyone know if I will be allowed to take that internal flight, as I think i have to take a lateral flow test 3-5 days after arrival, how long does that result take to come back ? I know things will probably change, just thinking I do not want to be stuck in Michigan freezing cold, while they lap it up by the heated pool in Arizona...

Quarantine rules upon return have scuppered our plans now, daughter has to be at school, and my boss won’t give me extra time off or work from home, that coupled Michigan really suffering at the moment, we’ve had to cancel going..

I’m done with this pandemic now…..

So sorry to hear that.

Im due to go to the States in the summer. Cancelled the trip in 2020 and 2021, im of the opinion that it will be cancelled again in 2022.

Any Oslo tips? May be there in Feb Covid-notwithstanding

A few, our first time so a few beginners blunders and how to do it better next time.

- Get a train from Oslo airport to city centre, £11. £200 blown by jumping in a taxi, just their going rates, ouch. Got the train on the return, a fast service.

- If you can stay in the square, don’t know it’s name where the Hotel Christiania Teatro and Grand Hotel are amongst others, do so. Lovely setting, close to everything.

If you do, from the airport get the train to NationalTheatre station, not Central station.

- Shopping expensive of course, except great value outdoor gear shop I found close by, Sport Outlet Karl Johan.

- Some harbour/fiord boat trips, but far too cold for us at -10c.

- Anyone going like home interiors or nordic style? The store Glas Magasinet is amazing.

- Liked the restaurant Olivia.

- Peppes Pizza is a relatively good value nice place.

A family trip, so didn’t look for bars!

Fantastic ... we've been skiing in Levi three times (Jan/Feb) ... are you anywhere near there?

A few hundred miles away.

I looked, many times including recently at skiing in Levi or Yllasjarvi. But this trip was booked on a whim and all the nice accommodation had long since been snapped up, or was the £6,000 glass roofed lodges out of our league.

Airports and flight ticket costs came into play … I worked out a nice plan of Gatwick >> Oslo >> Helsinki >> Rovaniemi that swerved UK rip off artists exploiting UK Lapland bound families getting their Santa trip in.

I’m replying to this one as an example, but genuine question for quite a few people - do people realise you can get a ‘day 2’ test any time after you land. I came back from a work trip to Barcelona late last Weds night, had a PCR test at 8:30 the next morning, isolated for the day and had the result by about 8pm that evening. Think it was about £65, which is a pain, but less so than cancelling a trip. Appreciate lots of other reasons to cancel though (like your Michigan issue), but hope this info helps some!

Yep aware of that, but we were landing Tuesday and I and the wife were going back to work Wednesday,
We can’t get extra time off, simple, and if we come back early, we miss New Year’s Eve party, etc cost changing flights etc, etc, possibility of rule changes in either or both countries while still out there, it doesn’t help we’re spending time in Michigan and Arizona as the wife’s parents are divorced, that’s a day travelling between the two states, plus who’s time do you cut, spend Christmas Day with one and New Year’s Eve with the other, eeees complicated

You can get a three to four hour PCR Test at Heathrow, it’s expensive at £300 but would have possibly been worth considering in your situation?

Per person ? Again the rich can afford to bypass certain situations.
Not sure we can stretch to that extra.

I wonder if you book them in advance and if they are refundable, if you don’t go.

Also we had test booked before we go, and they are not refundable and we’ve lost money there.

Did your result come back early or was it £65 for a same-day PCR?

Yeah, sadly per person.

Just rechecked and it seems these guys do it for £120 per person

https://katalysthealth.uk/fit-to-fly/heathrow/#fit-to-fly-tests

Ah I thought so, your confused.
The outward journey from the uk, yes you can speed up the tests and they are expensive.
We had the ones you posted the link for outward for £120 per person.

But on return now, you have to self isolate for 3 days and get a test upon return, which we cannot do now, because we have to go straight back to work and school.
If there was a rapid test on return with a result in 3-5 hours, for maybe £150 per person then we might think about it.

As I said we can't really come back early, as we want to see both parents near enough equally or it gets funny.

Ah well, people have bigger problems than this, so it is all pretty self indulgent, but not seeing her family for so long now. I feel they have missed out on our daughter growing up from a 9 year old to a 12 year old punky emo girl.
