An awesome orator, but comitted the hubris of greed - a more realistic strategy towards the end could have seen him succeed, which is a horrific thought.

have seen many different documentaries on Hitler, the third Reich and the war it seems to me that he could be best described as a shop steward. He was fairly intelligent, at least enough to form a consistant political view of how things where and what he'd do about them. He surrounded or associated himself with people willing to take an extra step which an oridinary person would object to. He gained popularity with his 'message' which then gave him a shot at the political big time and he took it with both hands.

As for the way the war went, he failed because by then he'd become a paranoid control freak and wouldnt take the advise of his generals. He lost the Russian front due to holding off taking Moscow and diverting his army south into the Ukraine to take the oil fields. It was also due to his desperate need for oil that he launched the north african campaign. A better strategy (and the plan most of his generals prefered) would have been to take Moscow, then take the ukraine before move south into the arab states.

Absolute genius and also a complete Psycho. the way he masterfully worked his way into office and held power was incredible.
