This thread is not to have a moan, merely to give people some perspective about relegation from previous seasons from this division, looking at how many teams have survived from our position.

For the purpose of this, I will be using tables from the 2nd weekend in March of each football year. Numbers in brackets are what points they finished on.

07/08:
Gillingham - 36 points - Relegated (46)
Bournemouth - 26 points - Relegated (48)
Luton - 25 points - Relegated (33)
Port Vale - 25 points - Relegated (38)

06/07:
Bradford - 38 points - Relegated (47)
Cheltenham - 37 points - Stayed Up (54)
Brentford - 33 points - Relegated (37)
Rotherham - 28 points - Relegated (38)

05/06:
Swindon - 39 points - Relegated (48)
Walsall - 38 points - Relegated (47)
Rotherham - 37 Points - Stayed Up (52)
MK Dons - 34 points - Relegated (50)

04/05:
Torquay - 37 points - Relegated (51)
Wrexham - 36 points - Relegated (43)
Peterborough - 31 points - Relegated (39)
Stockport - 25 points - Relegated (26)

03/04:
Notts County - 36 points - Relegated (42)
Stockport - 35 points - Stayed Up (52)
Brentford - 34 points - Stayed Up (53)
Wycombe - 26 points - Relegated (37)

02/03:
Huddersfield - 36 points - Relegated (45)
Mansfield - 36 points - Relegated (44)
Northampton - 34 points - Relegated (39)
Cheltenham - 33 points - Relegated (48)

01/02:
Northampton - 38 points - Stayed Up (49)
Notts County - 37 points - Stayed Up (50)
Wrexham - 36 points - Relegated (43)
Cambridge - 25 points - Relegated (34)

00/01:
Bristol - 37 points - Relegated (51)
Luton - 34 points - Relegated (40)
Swansea - 28 points - Relegated (37)
Oxford - 16 points - Relegated (27)

So, in the previous 8 seasons, there have been a total of 32 teams relegated from League One (obviously).

Out of the 32 teams in the relegation zone on the 2nd weekend of March, only SIX have avoided relegation.

For the 8 teams occupying 22nd spot, 3 teams have successfully avoided the drop, but only by accumulating points totals of 50, 52 and 54.

From a fans point of view, our outlook doesn't look good, and from a statistics perspective, it doesn't look that much better either.

Going on past seasons, we will need at least 50 points, possibly even 52 to stay up. This means we need another 15-17 points from somewhere.

Before you all ask, yes, I was slightly bored, but thought this may interest some people.

But......we normally shadow WBA's season and that ain't lookin' pretty at present (though after missing a promotion last season I don't see why we should get a relegation this! ;))

These stats mean nothing though:shrug:

Well they should do:

"Out of the 32 teams in the relegation zone on the 2nd weekend of March, only SIX have avoided relegation."

That is a stark statistic. And it doesn't seem to matter much where in the bottom four you are - the 21st club has survived just once in those 8 seasons.

Luton's victory over Grimsby tonight gives them hope, even if they don't benefit from clubs above them going into administration.
Wrexham could easily make the play-offs, so could Oxford. Current table:

Thats some top stat finding great work djmiles.

Its up to people to find some encouraging stats now........ GO!

Although that does look very depressing i'll try a good stat.

Good stats...well if i haven't been completely mind f***ed from the quantity of harry westons vintage I've had tonight and my memory serves me right, we were the SEVENTH team to get back to back title promotions, so lets be the SEVENTH team to go on this great escape list!!

Incidentally my birthday is the SEVENTH of April when we will be playing Hereford away, which i too will be attending and predict we will score SEVEN goals by which point we will have picked up another SEVEN points in total against Scunny, Tranmere and Mk on our way to survival!!!

There are enough coinseethingies in there for me to believe we can do this!!! *

COME ON YOU SEAGULLS:albion2::albion2::albion2:

*Admittedly i could be feeling stupidly optimistic due to cider intake and may have made alot of that up

Have you been reading that old "Dandy" Annual feature starting As I was walking up to Leeds I met a man with seven steeds......"?

When my parents first met in 1962, Brighton & Hove Albion were 3rd from bottom in Division 3.

We have always been a Division 3 club and always will be.
Sometimes we go up for a while - sometimes we go down for a while - but our home is Division 3.

We will always be so because there will never be a big enough crowd to support them and therefore not enough money to buy top players.
This is the problem with living on the south coast.
Too many retired people who have moved here to finish off their lives but still support their home teams.

The days of 30,000 crowds will never come back.
Too many other forms of entertainment.

The worst thing that ever happened to football was the formation of the Premiership.
Too much money goes into those teams.
Many people said this at the time and it's coming true - or HAS come true.

These days, most of the Premier teams, if they need a new player, go overseas. The divisions below them cannot often bring on young players.
The game is dying.
It won't be long now before Div 1 & 2 will be part-timers

I actually agree with a lot of that. Somethings can change though. With Falmer, maybe we could be a team that predominantly stays in the Championship, a bit like Burnley.

As an indicator of whether we will stay up or not, they indeed mean nothing.

As an indicator of how hard it is to stay up when you are in the relegation places in second week of March, they are very telling.

Nice work djmiles - and interesting ans sobering observation for those of us still clutching at the hope of survival.

Why do you keep posting that? I think this is the third thread I've seen it on - and it's not even relevant to this one.

Greetings from a foggy Swakopmund...Gully is on his travels!!!

I tend to agree with what Steve Foster posted, the Premiership has turned into a bit of a Cuckoo...with all those below being the birds and eggs tossed out in order that the big bird might prosper, the prognosis isn't really that rosy at the moment, unless of course your club is extremely well run within its means (many aren't, but I really believe that we are under the stewardship of DK...for all his detractors, he is a shrewd businessman and for that we should be thankful.

Even some of those in the Premiership must be a little worried, if the grinning loon at Chelsea gets bored and pulls his backing out they will be right royally screwed...I could see them dropping off the pace completely as they won't be able to continue paying the wages of the current squad...given the current financial downtrend it is likely that football will be seen as a poor investment for foreign backers, the good days at the top may well be numbered and there will be a sea-change in English football...which may not be a bad thing if it evens the playing field up a little, there will doubtless be casualties along the way, but well run clubs (even those below us) may be the ones to survive and prosper.
