Highest break in snooker

fatboy said:
So if your opponent hits the black from the break four times you would start with 28.

If you were snookered behind the black you could then get a free ball and then pot the black and then clear up.

This would give a 155 break to add to your 28 giving you a very impressive 183.

Pedant alert - If it was called a miss, the frame would be forfeited after 3 fouls.

Yes, but its possible to get far, far higher scores without acheiving a high break - e.g you get red/black/red, then your opponent fouls a number of times, then you get red/black/red, and so on. I'd have to get a calculator to see what the max is, but it could be huge. And never going to happen.

I was the person with the highest (remember, low is good) pitch and putt score in the game where the current Irish record was set - 20 for an 18 hole course. I had 62 :(

Is that even a possible score? It would mean at least 16 hole in ones, which even on a short pitch and putt course must damn near impossible.

It is possible - it was the course owners son, he played the course a number of times a day, every day - and hence got 16 hole-in-ones and two 2's

This rule as changed recently, you only forfit the game after 3 missies if you were not snokered. If you are snookered then their is no limit to the number of missies that can be called.

We talking pitch and put of just putting? I find it totaly impossible to belive this. If his short game was that good he would be a top pro.

OK then. Theoretically, what's the lowest score you can get with a total clearance (15 reds + colours)? Answer here later as I have to go out now.

*awaits MYOB to post correct answer* :lolol:

I remember a question on this during the World Snooker Championshps many years ago, end in 'theory' (in practice this is impossible), the highest break is 162.

Assume there is a handicap system, and the oponent has a handicap of 155, then if you get a free ball, pot it, etc.etc, and the black gets respotted and you pot it with you taking the first shot, the break would be 162. However, I never liked that as it is in practice impossible.

72

15 reds + 15 yellows = 45

Colours = 27

45 + 27 = 72

OK (remember this is theory only)

Player A is crap - gets a handicap of 159.

Player A commits a foul, snookers player B on all reds.

Player B pots free ball & black. Then a further 15 reds & blacks, all colours leaving scores ties at 159 (sorry I posted 155 earlier :dunce: ). Scores are tied, so the black gets respotted and player B wins toss and pots black with first shot. As a continous run of scoring without missing in a frame, it would count as a break of 162.

p.s. I don't think it's correct, as it's impossible, but I suppose in theory.......

Also they would toss to see who broke on the respotted black so it would not be the same break.

Though the lowest possible combind score is 31 though impossible to every happen. You pot all 15 reds in the same shot as well as the white (or the yellow, green or brown). The reds stay down but you do not get any score for them, but your oppenunt gets 4 points. The rest of the colours are then potted.

I'm not saying it's my theory, but was espoused by the commentators/professionals going back about 10 years or so. I think the consensus view was that it was a break because the player never missed during the run of scoring.

As I said, I'm only repeating what was put forward by a few people on the TV during a World Championship many years ago.
