It's a really good day out, but take my advice and avoid Sundays or Bank Holidays. There are far too many people to make it enjoyable.

A summer hols weekday should be ok

Kids between 3 and 6 might be bored with the actual castle unless as per previous posters you go on one of the weekends when they have an event in the grounds like jousting/archery display/falconry.

The castle gardens and maze are really nice and perfect for a picnic.

I thought it was over-rated, Leeds Castle is better for kids because it looks like a proper castle with a moat n' shit.

If you're looking for alternatives Warwick castle is good. Run by Tussauds so quite a lot to see. When I was there they had two blokes smacking the crap out of each other with pikes and swords and some impressive archery displays which it sounds like your kids would enjoy. It's in good condition too with access to the towers and battlements. Bit of a distance though obviously.

I thought Leeds Castle was a massive disappointment. Only good when the ballooning events are on. Hever has a moat too by the way

Hever Castle is Brilliant

had a great day out there last summer with Mrs Shingle and the boys aged 15, 11 and 9. Plenty to do, take a packed lunch and sit by the lake / moat but as chips says avoid sundays ( theres too many people )

My daughter went with the school a couple of years ago, she enjoyed it especially the maze which has some water bits in it as well so be prepared to get a bit wet. She was 8 when she went btw

Both Hever and Leeds are good days out, you can't go wrong.

Bodiam is pretty good for kids.

And Pevensey is worth a visit - the bit that impresses me is the concrete structure built in the 1940s. The place has been in more or less constant use as a castle since the Romans first built it.

Incidentally, where's the castle in Castle Square?

The thing that amuses me about Bodiam is that some time in 1940 someone decided to build a pillbox in front of it.

Bloody great castle with six-foot thick walls, been there since 1388, so they decide to fortify it with a ten-by-ten concrete bunker. Belt and braces gone daft.
