A month ago I made a list of candidates to replace RDZ when he was inevitably mutually sacked at the end of the season, and I had Rydström on it. I even googled for Rydström-to-Brighton rumours and there was none, so I thought it would be the "edgy outsider" mention along with some more likely names. Quoting:

"So who do you think should be the replacement? I can think of a few candidates:

Graham Potter - the obvious choice, a manager who fits our club policy of player development and long-term team building like a glove. After lessons learned at Chelsea it might also be our best shot at a good manager we can keep for a LONG time.

Will Still - for the second season in a row he is keeping Reims above expectations and at some point or another a PL club (or big Championship club) are going to swoop him up. I wouldn't be shocked if that's us.

Kjetil Knutsen - everybody wants him but he gets a percentage of player sales in Bodö/Glimt making him one of the, if not the, best paid managers in the world. He's had several offers from big clubs but we would fit him better than most. He'd have to turn down millions to take the job though.

Henrik Rydström - another Scandi manager. Won the title in Sweden with Malmö FF last year, going to win it again this year, all while developing players and playing a style of the most modern possession football (based on the now hyped 'relations' model).

Michael Carrick - Boro is a bit up and down but essentially playing good football with limited resources, and Carrick is generally highly thought of. If we get something from the Championship, this guy can't be ruled out.

Steve Cooper - although both his Swansea and Nottingham sides were borderline unwatchable, the results were excellent and Cooper is also known to be good with young players. He can't be ruled out and would be quite high on the lists of the bookies.

Marti Cifuentes - the QPR manager took over in October when they were 6 points below relegation and has steered the ship while having his team playing progressive, possession football. Would probably cheap and has a good reputation as a promising manager. Personally I don't like him, but I could see it happening.

Franck Haise - the Lens manager was mentioned last time around. He is a very flexible manager that adapts formation and style based on the players available. No more "sorry can't get a point against Bournemouth because we sold two midfielders last year".

Adam Lallana/Andrew Crofts - moving directly from a player career to a manager career is highly unusual, as is co-coaches (at least in the top 5 leagues and in England). But this was the interim solution last time around and if the key people at the club liked what they saw, then maybe."

When RDZ was gone, I published the list again on Reddit and in a big Albion Facebook group. A day or three later We Are Brighton also wrote about him. Before me and "We Are Brighton" started talking about there was no rumours whatsoever about it. When we did, he soon enough made the betting markets.

I contacted Swedish media, pointing "hey, look at the betting markets! Can't you find out more and write about it?", and so they did. And this is why they are all referring to betting markets.

You’re basing your opinion on Rydstrom’s suitability on a) your single-handed influence of the betting markets and b) that your list is different to Bloom and Barbers, neither of which can be confirmed. So until we actually announce otherwise, I don’t understand why Rydstrom wouldn’t be in consideration anyway. I don’t agree Potter is the right fit or we would have hired him again already. I genuinely think for him it would be a step back (whether there’s true us besides the point).

So until we actually announce otherwise, I don’t understand why Rydstrom wouldn’t be in consideration anyway. I don’t agree Potter is the right fit or we would have hired him again already. I genuinely think for him it would be a step back (whether there’s true us besides the point).

If we leave Potter out of this, Rydström is still a manager who has ONLY managed domestic Swedish football and - a few games aside - only even played domestic Swedish football. I don't think it has ever happened that any club in England appointed a Scandinavian manager with no experience from football abroad or in continental competitions.

This summer Rydström will be managing in Europe for the first time as Malmö FF are going into the CL qualifiers. If they can qualify for CL or do alright in Europa League, then this guy starts becoming a realistic choice.

Are we watching him? Most certainly. Are we appointing him now? No chance in hell.
