How do you put a bet on for a manager that isn’t on the lists of the various bookies? I’m not claiming to have any inside info, I’m just curious as to how a punter would be able to put the first bet on someone so they then appear in the various markets.

Ok, lets start with the bad news:

"One of the coaches who is on the rise in Swedish football, Henrik Rydström, confirms the picture that Backe gives. The Kalmar FF coach has long tried to look towards Potter's team. He has taken a coaching course together with Björn Hamberg and thus gained good insight.

- When I opened my eyes to Potter, it was when Östersunds had moved up to the Allsvenskan and played their premiere against Hammarby. You yourself had fumbled quite a lot based on which football you wanted to stand for and how you wanted to conduct it. I was so impressed by what had been here. "You can't have the ball". Then Östersund came and could have it, says Rydström.

- Then you got to experience Östersund when I became an assistant with us. Then you felt: "Damn, there are alternatives everywhere". They were flexible… it was like a revelation that you can actually do this with non-world players. Then I was lucky enough to attend the Pro training with, among others, Björn. It was 2018-2019. It became natural to ask and try to find out as much as possible about how they worked. Then I understood that: "Damn, this is good". It resonated a lot with how I wanted to do…

Potter is not Scandinavian, but has been active here for a long time. Could it be an inspiration for you to get from the Allsvenskan to the top of Europe?
- Graham's big advantage is that communication never becomes a problem for him. Here's how: Swedish coaches have had a bit harder time succeeding abroad, with a few exceptions, and I think it's because we haven't been tactically flexible enough and haven't been trained well enough either. It has been more about organization and 4-4-2. It's not really enough when you come abroad.

- It's about communication. You lose some dimension if you have "Asa-Nisse-English". It has to be a little better than that. Even if "Svennis" has really had a fantastic career with "Åsa-Nisse-Engelska". It is the exception that proves the rule. I think it is an inspiration to many of us coaches. Perhaps above all because it shows that it is possible to take a different approach to the coaching profession than what you yourself have grown up with as a player. I think that Graham and his team are a typical example of that, and that it can also be done in a different environment than the Swedish one. Then we all know what skill he and his team have… the rest of us struggle. They are top notch.

In any case, it sounds like you took a lot of inspiration from Potter's ideas.
- Yes. At first I observed it from the outside, then you became an opponent. When you take the last step in coaching training, it becomes therapy, but you also share a lot of experience with each other. Björn is very unprestigious and has zero ego. He has shared a lot about how they work. Above all, I've asked a lot about what kind of learning environment they've had, how they've taught, how they've gotten the players to do one thing or the other. Then I was inspired.

- Then you've had some ideas and think: "Hell, if they can do it, and they can do it in Swansea, I can probably do this". It is inspiration. But you always have to make it your own. You get something to relate to. If you have to do something that no one else has done where you are, there is a certain uncertainty. Then I was able to get support there, replies Rydström.

Do you have any contact with Björn today?
- I think you stick together in all Pro training courses. We have an SMS group that we write in. Some people have more contact with than others. The last time we talked was about a player that we would borrow from them, but then nothing came of it.

- It will be sporadic. Everyone is busy with their own. In all groups there are people where you feel: "That person I can talk football with, I can get advice there". Björn is one of those who are at the forefront when it comes to football knowledge. And then he is a good person. Above all that.

So you wanted to borrow from Brighton?
- (laughter) You have to use all the contacts you have. When I was at Sirius, we were going to borrow a goalkeeper. Then I received a text message from our scout Adrian (von Heijne): "They have a Spaniard, he is the third goalkeeper. Maybe we can borrow him". I texted Björn: "The Spaniard you have, is he possible for us to borrow?".

- Björn replied: "You can watch tonight on Viaplay, because he is against Tottenham". It's their goalkeeper (Robert Sanchez) now. We were right that it was a good goalkeeper, but it was not so relevant for Sirius. Then there have been other players that we have looked at a bit.

You get to go home and work on "Åsa-Nisse-English" and you get to take over City when Pep has to leave.
- (laughter) You have to take a step below first. I would think so, says Rydström."

And then move over to the good news:

When I made a post on Facebook and Reddit a month ago listing potential future managers, bringing up Rydström as one six managers, I probably created this "rumour". He was the 'edgy' mention I made to keep people on their toes, but here we are a month later, discussing this impossible appointment. It could well be entirely my fault.

In reality, you can't recruit a Scandinavian coach who hasn't shown his worth in any continental competition. Rydström won't get that experience until later this summer. The Malmö FF squad is three or four times more expensive than any other squad in their league and it is really hard to judge their managers based on that. It is unthinkable taking the step from managing only domestic football in Sweden to managing in the Premier League.

Its not happening.

Somewhat uncharacteristically (bloke makes Barber look like a minimalist haiku-writer), Henrik has not replied to the email I sent him last week  Actually a little bit odd...

Still think there's no chance - but what if? Are you ready for a man who learnt all he knows from Björn Hamberg?
Are you prepared for dozens of new NSC Swedes?

Anyway, this rumour has been completely missed out by Swedish media, but I'll push the button and see if anyone can find out if there's some truth in it.

Rydström or the half-Swede Potter in. We soon got a brand new IKEA in the heart of Brighton. Anything else we could lay our greedy hands on? The Pier? The Pavilion? i360?

Edit: I also find it rather strange that there's nothing in the Swedish media about Sir Henrik. But it's one year too early, Champions League qualifiers ahead, he won't leave now ... or ...

Absolut.

That said, we're probably 3 years of Rydströmian success until the board is bilingual...

Well played staying away from the ban btw. Once I saw your writing and that you were pro-Potter I thought "ok, there's going to be confusion here". But you're clearly... smooth. Thought I saw you post something about going to watch a game, did you go?

Well, Rydström and di blåe is going for the Champions League title next spring 😀 Time to leave Forest -79 behind. After that he’ll be ready! No games since the FA-cup semi.

Brighton are looking for a new manager.
Now Henrik Rydström (!) has sailed up as one of the odds favorites in England to get the job.
"Of course his name is mentioned," writes his agent Stevan Selakovic in a text message to Fotbollskanalen.

See when MFF won the Swedish Cup in the player above.

Last year, Henrik Rydström led his Malmö FF to SM gold and in recent years he has been one of the hottest coaches in Allsvenskan. Already when he was a guest on Fotbollskanalen's podcast Lundh in May 2023, Rydström told that he had attracted foreign interest, from the English Championship and the Netherlands, and last winter he revealed to Fotbollskanalen that he is now represented by an agent after renegotiating his contract with MFF.
His progress in Sweden has also earned him international attention. Rydström has been written about in the British Guardian and interviewed with everything from Italian La Gazzetta dello Sport, French So Foot to British Sky Sports and the Independent.

Now the 48-year-old is also mentioned again in major international contexts. He has sailed up as one of the odds-on favorites to take over the Premier League team Brighton, who are looking for a new coach after the success man Roberto De Zerbi left. In recent days, Rydström has been among the top four on odds lists from British companies such as Sky Bet, Betfair, Ladbrokes and Paddy Power.
Supporter sites have speculated around Rydström's name, but no mainstream British media have published information about Rydström being an option for Brighton.
So is there any truth to the rumours? The football channel has searched for Malmö's sporting director Daniel Andersson without success. Rydström's agent Stevan Selakovic says that he has no comment on whether Brighton has agreed. But he writes the following in a text message:

"Given the results that Henrik has achieved and the work he has done, it is natural that his name is mentioned in such contexts, but right now he is solely focused on Malmö FF".
One of the few Swedish coaches with Premier League experience is Hasse Backe. He was an assistant coach at Manchester City in 2007/2008 and explains that odds lists from British betting companies should be taken with a grain of salt. But he believes at the same time that this type of thing means something to Rydström's name and status in general.
- It's really big that after a relatively short coaching career, the Premier League is mentioned around. It's phenomenal. I hope they (the betting companies) are right. It would be crazy fun, says Backe.
- Should he get a concrete request, just take it. You have to dare. But it will be something completely different for him, in terms of dealing with characters, players and English media.

Do you find it incredible that Rydström could be relevant for this assignment?
- I wouldn't say it's unbelievable. Names always figure in processes like this. But how did it pop up? You don't know that. After all, I have experienced it myself that one's own name popped up in the most different places.
Backe explains that it often works in such a way that different agents, who do not necessarily represent the coach in question, enter names for different clubs and that they try to stitch together a deal.
- There are agents everywhere, with whom you may not have contact. Then they can call and say: "If you get the job, can I represent you?".
Does it mean anything to Rydström that he receives international attention and is interviewed by major media?
- Yes, I think so. As soon as you become visible, you are there. Then you never know how concrete things will be. But it's positive for him, Backe replies.

Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna has previously been tipped as the favorite to take over Brighton but recently the Guardian and the Athletic stated that he looks set to remain in his post. Another that British media have described as an option for the club is former Östersund coach Graham Potter.
Recently, Malmö's chairman Anders Pålsson explained in an interview with Fotbollskanalen that they hope to keep Henrik Rydström for at least a few more years.
- We definitely hope so. But the unsworn is the best. That has been learned over the years in this sport. Something can always come up, so you have to be prepared, said Pålsson.
- As always, we must be prepared for the fact that there are interested parties. That's how it is with talented people.
Brighton finished eleventh in the Premier League last season.
Malmö FF meets Elfsborg in the Allsvenskan on Tuesday.

The Malmö fans are pissed....

Why would he want to coach a worse team? bottom team in pl or the opportunity to win the champions league with malmö, the choice is simple....

There's no real new information here, or any additional info really - the article is mainly based on what I told them yesterday (that Rydström has been high up on the list of the bookies etc), and since then they've chased down some quotes from Rydströms agent Stefan Selakovic, the Malmö CEO and this old manager called Hasse Backe.

Selakovic doesn't want to say if he's been in touch with Brighton. Doesn't say all that much. Same with the CEO saying he wants to keep Rydström for a few more years etc.

As for Rydström himself - no quotes in the article, but he did answer my Barber-long "Surely you're not going to Brighton?!"-email and since no state secrets were revealed, I might as well quote it in its entirety:

"Hi
Wonderful email.
It sounds like you know what you're talking about."
Cryptic stuff.. but I remain 99% sure he won't be our next manager.
