Environmental impact is an irrelevance as in the future planes will be hydrogen powered or other synthetic clean fuel

Since the key problem, from what little i have heard and read so far, is incompatibility with staying in the Paris (climate change) agreement, then it can't be solved with increased air traffic somewhere else?

So, either admit (as Trump has done) that you don't give a shit and withdraw from the Paris agreement (and risk discovering that the UK isn't the US and you can't rely on ignorance to the same extent) or find an alternative that won't lose too many votes...

But it can’t be used in tandem with
26L/08R which is why they want a second at LGW.

If they widen the second runway by 12 metres they can move the centreline enough to allow both Gatwick runways to be used at the same time.

So a comparitively cheap and quick solution to adding capacity with no taxpayers money required.

The full new runway at Gatwick would be a bigger project but still a lot easier and cheaper to deliver than the Heathrow option.

They currently manage to shoehorn huge passenger numbers on a single runway, despite using it for both take-offs and landings and routinely scheduling a couple of take-offs for the exact same take-off times. Bringing the second runway into service would be far cheaper and easier than slowly grinding out a third runway at the seriously outdated airport that is Heathrow shirley?

But doesn't solve the main problem - which is the failure to 'assess how a third runway could be consistent with the Paris target' (which has been ratified by UK government and confirmed by this judgement to have binding effect).

Potentially this has implications well beyond aviation.

(For the avoidance of doubt I think this is F*cking GREAT news, that's despite that I love travelling and flying)

I stand corrected, it seems plans are well advanced to bring 26R/08L in to tandem operation for TO’s only by smaller jets and props, by 2026!

Will there now be a new proposal for the "Boris Island" Airport in the Thames Estuary?

The cost of building this in the middle of nowhere airport would be crazy longer journey in cars lorries for deliveries etc

the Boris island actually is the better option "environmentally"

The reduction in car/lorry miles would offset a lot of carbon footprint

London could be served by airports to N S E W
easier access to “main” airports to a larger area of the country
second crossing of the Thames further out can be created - therefore traffic to/from Dover does not need to get to the M25

I wonder whether the government's decision not to appeal is guided by political considerations. He's just captured a swathe of northern seats and has said he's going to 'level up' so that the north isn't so neglected. A multi-billion pound development down south doesn't exactly give the right message
