Right across the board we humans do place our moral standards on the animals, and most of the animals do NOT fare well from our place in the world.

Every day, millions of creatures die in Britain so we can eat their flesh.

I feel that sentence deserves some thought, some space of its' own. Animals have indeed been skinned alive, because the abattoir method failed to finish the creature properly.
Human actually deliberately put animals under the most awful torture, macabre experiments worthy of Joseph Mengela, unspeakable pain inflicted on them while their brains were exposed, so we can examine the response ......of unspeakable pain. Blowtorches on the side of a live, conscious pig, to burn it so badly ...... that we can examine the effects of burning on skin.
The documented operation of the dismantling of a monkey, taking it apart muscle by muscle, organ by organ - so they could see how long the brain, stem, and nervous system could be kept alive without the rest of the body.

The tortures of the Japanese and Germans in war can barely approach the ones we regularly sanction upon animals.

Why not simply do what you can - shop at places that do not use animal-tested products. The Body Shop is one, perfumes and soaps, toiletries and household products that are not causing animal tests.

Do NOT eat 'Veal' especially. This is a young calf that is prevented from living freely, walking and exercising its' muscles, is force-fed with things that keep the meat week and white, and is killed before it can enjoy any kind of life. ???
Cut down on your meat intake. You do not need to eat meat with every meal, you do not need much of it when you do eat it - if you must, then why not make the bulk of your meal vegetables, nuts, seeds and fruit?
Versatile, various, delicious, nutricious, and necessary for a balanced healthy diet.
Instead of Uncle Sams or some other burger chain - spend the same in a Food For Friends, or another vege restaurant, and actually feel that you have eaten healthy food, after it's finished?

You might also feel just a little self-esteem growing, from the small amount of effort it takes to be aware, and to not add to the merciless killings done elsewhere so that society can safely and blithely buy a shiny, environmentally unfriendly wrapped parcel, of mostly-blood-drained flesh on polystyrene.

My bird is a vegetarian, so as a couple we only eat a relatively small amount of meat. (I eat a lot, she eats none). Does that count?

Who's counting? I could give a monkeys what you decide to consume, it's your mouth you are putting it in.
If you prefer hormonally encouraged meats, sulphite-pumped chickens, fried skin loaded with fat and battered so the frying oils are included, have at it. It's your choice, and there will be millions of households chucking back the battery-raised products from the cheap section in the cheap supermarkets, and it's entirely up to them.

somewhere in Eastbourne
thew!!started something here.
we have six cats and none of them catch birds probably because they(4 of them anyway) are townies from good old Brighton the other two are welsh and a bit wild and much younger but still have not managed to catch a bird(both have collars and bells).
being in rural wales we have just about every bird imaginable in our garden (inc two super buzzards that float about overhead)there really is so much wildlife here that the cats are spoiled for choice therein the rub some here that they just look (we have bird feeders in the tree's).
just a few points to make about the law and these points will be tightened up even more once the new animal welfare laws come in very soon.
it is illegal to knowingly kill a cat.
it is illegal to abuse or neglect a cat
it will be illegal to knock over a cat and leave it in distress.
it will be illegal to knowingly leave your cat in distress due to illness(it should go to a vet).
in fact the cat and any other animal will be more sacred than the cows in India.
all of the new laws will make the owner of any animal responsible for that animal.
a law that I am totally in agreement with but have my reservations about the RSPCA policing it,as they have a rather draconian view to things and would be in favour of a government run public inquiry into the RSPCA and their activities eg:- where do all their donations go (in my experience its not the animals).
theres the end of my rant and the picture is of the cat who seems to have got away from the fur trade in China note the cat pelts in the front of him/her.

I heard somewhere that it's legal to run over a cat (accidentally) and not report it, but not for a dog - you have to report that.

It seems fair enough.

Dogs are generally attended by a human, even when they're not on a lead. This idea that cats don't need to be, is fine.....until they dig in and crap in people's gardens, kill neighbourhood birds, or get flattened by a truck.
