Back in my east london days I took my (very much) better half to West Ham v the Albion (ironically she was the Albion fan in those days) early in 1990. Mike Small opened the scoring, but Stuart Slater came back with a belter in the second half and West Ham won 2-1. We followed that up with the return game just prior to the Hammers Fa cup semi final defeat to Forest with a 1-0 (I think) win for the Albion.

Her verdict on the experience was a polite "it was alright, I suppose" and we left it at that. She cannot abide any sport, so that was quite an enthusiastic response really.

My wife used to have a season ticket each season. When we had kids we agreed to only get one season ticket and take it in turns to look after the kids. She's only been 3 times now in the last 3 years!

My other half has been to loads of games, I think she feels sorry for me going on my tod, but less frequently in the last couple of years. This season, every game she has gone to she has seen us score three goals (Oldham, Plymouth, Rushden all away). The other games I have seen on my own (Brentford, Peterborough and Luton) have been woeful.

My wife loves football as much as I do - and her first team is Northwich Victoria, cos that's where she's from, which is how it should be - but she comes to most games and cheers the Albion on with the best of us! (Poor Vics, bottom of the Conference, about 17 defeats in a row...)

November 1973 was Mrs Inkerman's first ever game - only she didn't become Mrs Inkerman until November 1974.

At the Goldstone versus York it was. Crowd was 16,000 and nearly three times the previous home crowd - they all turned up to see my girlfriend, or was it because Brian Clough and Peter Taylor had just taken over?

My wife was a season ticket holder with me for two years. Her first game was a glorious hot day and we won. Six-nil I think.

She soon settled into third division mediocrity, the soulless ground and the pissing rain though, although she was treated to a championship season. *tsk* She doesn't know she's born.

Anyway she doesn't go anymore, which is just as well cos we're shite.

I took my other half to the Goldstone once. He was cold, bored and thoroughly miserable and was desperate to hear the final whistle. Never again.

I've taken two girlfriends to matches. One got up after Carl Mendonca missed a shot and screamed "Mendonca you plonker" then laughed for about a minute after.

The other screamed "offside" as the ball went off the side of the pitch.

Still with her, but working on alternative arrangements!

Mrs Gwylan has come to seven games with me. Won 6 and drew the other. She's also only seen us concede two goals.

She's slowly being converted from Millwall to the Albion. She's keener on the cricket though and is a bona fide Sussex fan these days.

And she did turn up at the Forty Notes quiz night... despite her reservations about a drunken night with Brighton fans.

It seems that most spouses are lucky charms when it comes to bringing them to games. Maybe they should come more often?

Unfortunately, my Mrs never was a good luck charm. She came to nearly a dozen matches and only saw us win once!

My father-in-law (from the US) is even more unlucky. He has sat through 360 minutes of football with me and has yet to see a goal scored by either team!

The last game my Mrs came to was Swindon away late last year. She enjoyed the first 20 minutes, then the sun went down. Approaching half time she had given up watching the game and went into a huddle to try and conserve body heat.

Rather sweetly she said she would see the game through so as not to embarrass me by leaving early. Still, seeing her huddled up like that not even vaugely concerned with the match, I sent her home at half time as she was, quite frankly, highly embarrassing.

I still reap the benefits from my act of human kindness, even today.
