Put up the price of stamps by enough and you can easily turn a loss into a profit.

er, thats not how it works. put them up too much, in aa declining market, and you'll more likely make a bigger loss.

The deal that she did to get the pensions liabilities off RMG's books and onto the Treasury's was very shrewd indeed. She's a good operator.

dont think she deserves any credit for that. the government would always have had to take the pension liability to have a solvent company to float.

The strike ballot based on pay (9% over 3 years) conditions and privatisation, is imminent.

In the meantime less than 1% of RM employees have opted out of the free shares.

I spy with my little eye something beginning with hypocrisy.
As I loudly pointed out in the office today.

that was easy money.

Sold yesterday at 470. I think they are a good share to own, but expect lots of be sold today and tomorrow with profit taking and the looming yes vote from the unions.

Honestly - Unions in this day and age. I so want them banned!

But, I think this is a great share for a balanced portfolio and with a good yield expected, I would certainly jump back on board if they get back to the £4 area, which could be as soon as the end of this week IMO

We are not allowed to sell ours for 3 years, I assume from today. Or 5 years if we don't want to pay tax.

Those dates will certainly spike the market.

are the unions going to vote for strikes when members have overwhelmingly supported the privatisation through taking their shares?

I am guessing you are referring to the free shares given to Royal Mail employees?

To be honest, only 10% of them are with employees. I suspect individual pension funds have far more than the entire workforce. And even then, not every RM employee will want to sell at the earliest opportunity.

As said back in #102, over 99% of staff have kept their shares.
RM have offered a pay rise of 8.7%, 3% this year back dated to April, with a £300 acceptance bonus.

The unions ballot against privatisation, the pay rise, and 'conditions', closes tomorrow.
Assuming they get a yes vote, I believe strike action can begin from 23.10.

What I don't agree with is RM will honour the £300 to all those that don't strike.
That doesn't seem right, or even legal.

True, but it's fairly safe to say x amount of 'new' shares will appear in the market on those dates.
Quite what that would do to the share price is way beyond my comprehension.

yes, but are the members going to vote for the strike? it would be rank hypocrisy to take the share than vote against privatisation, and the pay offer seems pretty decent to me.

I laughed at the muppet on BBC1 news who mentioned that RM staff would be able to sell their shares today , totally oblivious of the key fact the shares will be held in trust for 3 years or 5 years to avoid paying tax. The £70 of free shares given to BT staff back in 1984 also saw 99% of employees take them , including those union activists who took a role in the campaign against privatisation in the months leading up to the discounted giveaway. I was one of 6 UCW members in the Brighton Tels Branch who stood by their principles and didn't take the 30 pieces of silver.

I would be more surprised if they don't.
You have no idea of the mentality of the people you are talking about.

I'm very down on my office's union representation, as it would appear to be all take with no give.
But in fairness to them the management are so spineless the Union is allowed to dictate terms.

The problem I find is I agree with 70-80% of what the union stand for (in my office), but the other 20-30% is so ridiculous and against the principle of work, that I can no longer agree with the things that are right.
