Have we gone backwards as a football team in the last 12 months?

As someone else has already pointed out. Their playing for their lives and the pitch is shit like Woking last year. No relevance to the league imo

We managed a cracking start to this season in the Championship when Nooney, CMS and Barnes were in good-ish nick but gradually we subsided due to injuries, suspensions and teams learning our weaknesses from the constant TV coverage.

Plus we have been punished for silly mistakes and sloppy defending. Gus seems to have taken a far more defensive style of play which has among other things left CMS isolated, which saddens me.

This season is still work in progress. We ought to recover our earlier form now we have overcome most of the injuries. I am more optimistic now that Buckley is regaining fitness and hope that Hoskins will get a run in the team. KLL getting injured just as he regained form is another frustrating example of our luck with injuries.

I hope Gus recognises we need to reinforce the full backs as we are sitting ducks against pacey wide play.

If this team was playing in League 1 we'd be top & playing teams off the pitch just like we did last season. Now we're playing vastly superior opposition & more than holding our own. Tonight was a classic example of top non-league team putting the frighteners
up superior League opposition & nearly causing an upset.

it's nice when a genuine question gets a well thought response on here.

But Darren Ferguson, Freedman & Co will love the tapes especially re Calderon. The performance gave away too many nuggets for opposing managers in their planning.

The only thing that has gone backwards in the last 12 months are some of the fan base. Biggest load of drivel I have ever read on NSC.

Not at all. No settled side, great additions to the squad. Gus improving each and every player. Look at Noone. The Championship is full of big, aggressive sides and we're just getting used to the pace. Plus we've now got the Development Squad which seems to be adding players all over the place. So no. We're improving but not at the pace that some are expecting.

.

Most accurate statement on NSC for ages: especially:

"teams learning our weaknesses from the constant TV coverage"

"I hope Gus recognises we need to reinforce the full backs as we are sitting ducks against pacey wide play".

I forgot to mention that we have also been on the wrong end of a whole series of bizarre refereeing decisions this season.

Didn't think tonight's Ref did much to calm things down which helped Wrexham's aggressive style. Could easily have been one or two nasty injuries out there. But then Barnes was guilty of a dodgy challenge too.

We smashed FC United in the replay, once we'd figured them out. And I'm all for cup shocks, but not against us.

After a replay though. What i mean is anything can happen in the FA Cup and the performance means nothing if we win!

We are simply playing better teams. Last year we had the confidence of winning every week. Like Wrexham.

Thread closed on this comment really.

You can't underestimate how much difference a bit of confidence makes. We had it last year and we beat better teams than us. You can see it flowing through that Wrexham side.

You can't just judge every game on the basis of team X is above team Y so team X should win. Only a simpleton would think like that.

THis thread title is frankly staggering. The championship is light years ahead of league 1, I think we are doing remarkably well considering we have hardly made any changes to our promotion side of last year.
