[Technology] Have Sainsbury's, McDonalds, Tesco and Gregg's been subjected to cyber attacks ?

I've seen a few reports in the last couple of days that all the above have suffered significant outages, having to close stores and failing to make deliveries. They all say that the problem is down to 'software updates' but have refused to comment further.

I've heard it was software updates/patches to systems, even though not necessarily the same one they are from a provider who has been in the news a lot recently.

If it was a cyber attack why would they go after groups like Harrods when the impact of hitting the UKs largest supermarkets is likely to be a lot more far reaching?

It’s probably a bodged update and these companies have similar/the same underlying software holding up their systems.

Chip and pin was working at Sainsbury, just not contactless.

Would appear to be an application issue on a generic payment system I suspect.

Tesco had it a month or so ago as well

As someone who works in change for a large financial services company, you’d be amazed how often we stop people doing things that would bring the entire system crashing down. I wouldn’t rule out just useless developers being to blame.
