My guess is this will be a tempoary decline. It has always been recognised as the second busiest shopping street in town (city).

With the big development of housing and shops by the station and following regeneration of the North Laines it will not be long before developers turn to London Road.

north LAINE:)

The Co-op will be shut by the end of February. Half the departments and the fixtures and fittings are gone. The first floor is quite a spooky place to walk round now, but it gives you some idea of the sheer scale of the building. They'll be able to make it into a hundred over-priced luxury apartments or a dozen decent-sized non-chav shops. Be interesting to see what happens to the site.

Loads of bedding, pillows, duvets etc. left, all at knock-down prices. Oh, and a giant flat-screen telly that still seems to be for sale.

I'm back in Brighton next week so I will pop in and have a wander around for the last time.

I agree, I can imagine it being eery, Hanningtons certainly was at the end.

Aren't they just finishing laying the foundations? Be some kind of miracle if it opens on 1st March IMHO.
No, it's well on the way.

Surely with all the flats that are being built in the new area, the shops on London Rd have a ready made customer base?

Yes it is. I spoke to the manager the other week and he said it was going to be refurbushed.

THPP is right about the rest of the shop. Myself and Mrs Brovian had our lunch in the cafe last Monday and it was really wierd wandering through all the empty floors. It will make a GREAT apartment block.

I'll have to have a wander through there - sounds great.

I love shopping in the market and it will be great when it's done up. I agree with Yorkie, once those flats are completed, there are going to hundreds of potential customers.

I'm still reeling from the closure of the London Road Oddbins though - where am I going to buy my malts from now?

Yeah, poor show that. It's supposed to be re-opening as part of another off-licence chain, but you just KNOW it's going to be not as good as Oddbins. Whatever next? Richer Sounds moving out?

It's the French firm, Nicolas. It's a big chain, so scarcely independent.

They're good for wines but they're not going to stock whisky: a shocker.

really, my knowledge of French off licences is shady to say the least, the wine section did look great still which wast is the only section I'm really bothered about :)

Maybe worth taking another look. They had half a window full of malts when I went past there this morning. The Macallan at 25 quid to name but one (I can't spell the others)

Huh. I got an email from that branch of Oddbins saying that it was closing on 20 January and thanking me for my custom.

As the shop's manager himself told me that it was closed I, unsurprisingly, decided not to visit it.

Well it's not Oddbins anymore. It did close. Then it re-opened with new owners. But it's still an off-licence and it DOES have malts in the window.

Ah...I was told that the shop wouldn't be open for a couple of weeks and that it wouldn't be stocking malts.

Pretty accurate apart from that then.

The free state of Kemp Town
London Road is a f***ing bucket of shite now.

KFC and Richer Sounds are its only redeeming features.

Before long it'll just be a parade of clearance outlets and pound shops

Shame really

Subways is OK also. And the Spanish bakery place with the French name. Real nice food there.

In fact. London Road is far from bad. If the council would just PEDESTRIANISE the thing, it would flourish.
