I haven't been in the city since start of January, and it had closing down signs then.

But then again, that has been no indication sometimes as it seems as the JJB on North Street has been closing down for about 3 years!

Will be bizarre to walk along when it's shut.

Still had closing down sale signs when I went past in the week. My wife of 30+ years was with me - she's very sad as she worked there in her teens when I first met her. We bought our first sofa there when we got married.

It will be a rather sad day and with the closure of the sainsburies on London Road at the end of February, could prove to be the hammer blow to the street.

Do you mean Sports Soccer / Soccer World, the only JJB in Brighton is on Western Road.

That's the one. Excuse my ignorance because I hate going in those places!

Still can't believe they demolished the old cinema building that had been there previously.

The Co-op will be shut by the end of February. Half the departments and the fixtures and fittings are gone. The first floor is quite a spooky place to walk round now, but it gives you some idea of the sheer scale of the building. They'll be able to make it into a hundred over-priced luxury apartments or a dozen decent-sized non-chav shops. Be interesting to see what happens to the site.

Loads of bedding, pillows, duvets etc. left, all at knock-down prices. Oh, and a giant flat-screen telly that still seems to be for sale.

I heard the Coop foodhall was staying open, so you may be lucky.

Also there a big plans for the Open Market (if they are passed by planning). This involves temporarily decanting the Open Market traders into the Coop while the work is carried out.

Sad about the demise of both Sainsburys and the Co-op and London Rd in general. I grew up around there.

My guess is this will be a tempoary decline. It has always been recognised as the second busiest shopping street in town (city).

With the big development of housing and shops by the station and following regeneration of the North Laines it will not be long before developers turn to London Road.

It's all a tax con, the last "big closing down sale" saw the parent company wind up the old company then open a new one a few days later to clear all the debts owed by the old company.

Hope they don't close the food hall bit. Worth going just for the elderly Irish security guard that looks everyone up and down suspiciously as soon as they set foot in the place. As if he'd be able to catch a cold let alone a thief...
