i will be having a great day. My teenage kids will be going out trick or treating later. Unlike most they only got to houses without decorations. That way houses that normally miss out on the fun can join in all the halloween fun.

We should probably just ditch Nov 5 and join the rest of the world with this Halloween stuff. It's successfully invaded Japan they bloody love it here. Nov 5 isn't even a national holiday or even celebrated in parts of the country with a deep catholic history. And the commercially available fireworks are shit these days (but that still doesn't seem to stop large numbers of kids giving themselves third degree burns every year). On the whole Halloween is a far safer holiday that involves a bit of fancy dress and giving out some sweets to kids.

What's not to like?

Quite like All Hallows Eve as a time to remember the dead.

Have just moved to a new area and so am embracing it by getting the old pumpkin out (so to speak), and a bowl of sweets for any knockers (so to speak). Don't want to be known as the new person that doesn't open his door!

Usually though, I dim the lights, turn the TV down and pretend I'm not in...

I do like Halloween for the films on TV though.

I don't mind it. Mrs TC rather enjoys it all so we will be having our regular Halloween themed get together with friends and family at ours. It's been celebrated in this country for centuries.
I prefer Bonfire night though not your incestuous, unwelcoming Lewes crowd of inbreds for us. Shoreham beach is where it's at for traditional bonfire night celebration and all are welcome. Fortunately the saddos in societies who spend all year dreaming of this one night stay away and it's just good folk out for a good night before heading to the boozer. Perfect.

Having been on this planet for 64 years, I was never aware of Halloween being "celebrated" until comparatively recently.

And I think Halloween is very tiresome. I will have a box of Quality Street by the front door for if any little ones come round in the neighbourhood - they would usually be accompanied by parents, so it would seem churlish not to. But I certainly don't embrace it. It's too American.

As a child growing up in the 1960s we certainly had Halloween parties in the back gardens of Brighton around 50 years ago. Mind you, fancy dress back then meant little more than chucking a sheet over your head with a couple of eye holes cut out. And the "entertainment" was bobbing for apples.

On the other hand, you are right, the commercialisation and trick or treat claptrap is a far more recent cynical marketing import from the US.

It's been very much celebrated by ancient religions in this country since pre-history. The dead and passed souls being honoured in song, dance, libation and feasting. Admittedly the arrival of Christianity subdued these celebrations, eventually making it pretty much blasphemy. While I certainly give deference to my elders, 64 years on this earth doesn't make you an expert on thousands of years of history.
If you're saying you think the Americanisation of the celebrations is not to your taste, fair do's, I'm not a plastic tat lover myself. However to suggest it has not been celebrated before recent years is simply wrong and rather ignorant of any British religious history pre- Christianity.

I also remember celebrating Halloween and trick or treating as a nipper in the 70's so it's not as recent as you assume. Perhaps you just notice it more because your are an old git :)
