cohen isn't a great singer (although i do sometimes enjoy his sombre tones) whereas buckley was f***ing awesome

i think the thing with buckley's version that sets itself aside from most cover versions is that it still retained a lot of its meaning and you still believe it and wasn't JUST someone singing someone elses song

His cover got a lot of coverage in the documentary as a number of people heard his version first and associate the song with him. Arguably Buckley also popularised the song.

I have never quit got on with Buckley but I think I might give him another go.

good point, if Cowell or Walshes lot could make a hit out of it It would upset some of the snobs on here !

personally, I think I'll wait for Shane McGowans version, which should be more legible.

Maybe Status Quo will do a version huh Veg

where did you read that?

I heard it on the radio this morning. They played the jeff buckley version and encouraged listener to download that one, so that it gets bumped into the top 40.

I have the Jeff Buckley version, rufus wainwrights and leonard cohen's.

I will most definitely not be getting the x-factor version.

It was in the papers several weeks ago. Hallelujah bookies' favourite for Xmas number one. I thought it was LC's version, re-released on the back of his triumph never-ending tour of Europe this year, then found out whoever wins some TV talent show is scheduled to release it as their first single. *sad face*

Side note: Surprisingly, of the five Cohen gigs I've been to this year (Manchester Opera House, Dublin Kilmainhaim, Vienna Konzerthaus, Royal Albert Hall and Brighton Centre), the best sound by miles was at the Brighton Centre a couple of weeks ago. Normally that place sucks, but was widely regarded as the best sound there in years. Apparently it made the shortlist of three for which gig to release as a live Cohen DVD in March, but they eventually plumped for the summer gig at London O2 instead, boo.

I thought the Brighton sound was really good as well. I went to the 02 summer one as well so I`ll put that DVD on my xmas list if its out in time.
As for the winner of X factor recording it................... I`m sure LC would think it a great honour that they picked one of his little old songs.

The Lord Touched Me,then I Was Blessed

Brighton Centre Great For Lenoard Norman Cohen/02 In July Ok But Too Far Away. Best Venue Was Albert Hall About 14 Years Ago,went To All Three Nights And Got To Shake The Mans Hand, sat Near Nick Cave Who Looked Star Struck Or Pissed. Did Anyone Go To The Dome Early Seventies To See Cohen?

Guess it depends where you sit in relation to the mixing desk. The O2 sound was crystal clear at the back, but with echoes at the side. We were front-row centre seats at the Brighton Centre, but the sound was very soft.

<Shameless boast alert> Went back to the "green room" afterwards and met most of the band, who were extremely normal and pleasant. Sharon was raving about a "soul food" restaurant in Brighton, but I can't remember the name. LC was probably in bed by then. </Shameless boast alert>

BTW, the singalong at the end started because in Belgium "performers" get taxed less than the road crew, so they all joined LC on stage, and he kept it in.

You Lucky Lucky Lucky Bas***d! 40 Years I've Been Thinking Of Stalking Him! You Got To Damn Close For My Liking. Fair Play

You'd have got close if your brother-in-law was the promoter! (Rob Hallett - he's the tall guy in the photo) When he was a kid, he borrowed my wife's LC albums, so I guess it was pay-back time. Did I mention the autographed programme with the personal dedication to my wife?

Personally, I think Cohens deliver shows the power of the song and chord structure.
Buckley's is obviously beautiful and stirring, but for me the juxtaposition between Cohen's voice and the beauty of the song just does something different to me. And is quite rare if you take into consideration all the recorded music we have at our disposal- hence, classic.

I understand three versions of this song will be in the charts on Sunday. Jeff Buckley, Leonard Cohen and some woman from X-Factor. Sadly the X-Factor one is shifting the most units. The Power of NSC.
