I never heard Hallelujah before so I thought I would have a listen and see/hear for myself on youtube.....well, what a load of bollocks, talk about The Emporer's New Clothes.... if thats a classic song I'd rather have Cool For Cats by Squeeze or The State I'm In by Belle and Sebastian.. sorry Leonard, get yer coat.... you are the weakest link !

the fact you have never heard that song before exempts you from this thead.

Oh dear young fellow, Its 2008 and you have just heard it for te first time.... you are so hip.

Apparently recorded by over 70 artists. Just shows how shit Leonard Cohen is if he cannot sing it properly to begin with.

There are not many occassions when a cover is better than the original but the Jeff Buckley version is simply one of the best pieces of music ever recorded - shame the silly sod decided to go swimming with his boots on !

locic dictates that if the song had been any good I would have heard it before and remembered it. As it is... this just seems a load of mumbling to me. There a plenty of far superior songs out there that I can recall.

I'm more of a BUCKLEY man myself, but to be honest that was probably the first version I heard. Still, it's the one that's on my iPod now, and I can't see that changing...

cohen isn't a great singer (although i do sometimes enjoy his sombre tones) whereas buckley was f***ing awesome

i think the thing with buckley's version that sets itself aside from most cover versions is that it still retained a lot of its meaning and you still believe it and wasn't JUST someone singing someone elses song

I love the BUCKLEY version, maining due to its use in a very moving scene in The West Wing.

It was a prog called The Fourth, The Fifth, The Minor Fall R2 at 7pm.

...and now available to listen to via the wonders of iPlayer. Hallelujah indeed!

I don't think it does. My sister has probably never heard it and wont unless girls Aloud or Take That release a version.

Okay, but this isn't about logic. Despite being a Cohen fan, the song didn't grab me until I heard Wainright's version, then Buckley's. But Cohen "reclaimed" his own song when I saw him at the O2 earlier this year. Ironically, I think he'd absorbed the other versions, but his voice was so much better than on his recorded versions.

good point, if Cowell or Walshes lot could make a hit out of it It would upset some of the snobs on here !

personally, I think I'll wait for Shane McGowans version, which should be more legible.
