Forlan would probably move somewhere like Liverpool or Spurs for 12 million and be on 60-70k a week easy. Was best player at the world cup possibly. Oh right but Gus is from the same country..... doh! How stupid of me to overlook that factor.

Glad to see a few in agreement on Miller. Sadly this is a TOTALLY spurious GUESS on my part, rather than some Jabasco-esque SCOOP.

Would LOVE it to be true though. The guy is an absolute BEAST.

Some very angry responses here to the question is it total FANTASY that we'd sign Forlan. Where does the suggestion of realistic or possible signing feature in that question?

We once signed Bobby Smith in the 4th division when he was an England International the previous year, just remember that when you go boggle eyed with rage at a rather tongue in cheek question.

Nobody is going "boggle eyed with rage" at the Forlan suggestion, but some people seem to be getting a little bit carried away, and are allowing themselves to believe that there is a slight possibilty he will come here. There isn't. He's not. And it makes us all look like a bunch of delusional tits to everyone else by even bothering to raise the subject.

The Bobby Smith signing is a complete irrelevance. That was 50-odd years ago, the game is totally different nowadays and far more money-orientated then back in those days. Unless the player in question is utterly crocked beyond repair, there is no way a high-profile International player will EVER wind up in the lower leagues within a year of playing for his country. Something would have to be seriously wrong with him.

He could be a Scottish international...

He's only a Welsh international. Same as Scotland, thats not what I'd call a "high profile" International player. Crofts was called up by Wales whilst playing for us in the 3rd division - Wales's standards are far, far lower than Englands, their team is always rammed with lots of lower-league fodder. Its why they are perenially so shit.

He's also doing it to play for his home town club before his knackered knee gives in completely.

Newbury, Berkshire.
which is exactly the issue ( and I have put up with 35 years of this). IT must be sustainable and the club must be able to finance these things over and above Bloom or we will be in the same boat as the very clubs we smugly like to slag off.

We are in the same boat as the clubs we smugly like to slag off, it's called the Championship.

If you want to do this all without some money being spent on players then it will be Paul Kitson, a 13 match run of consecutive defeats and straight back down to League one with a much reduced season ticket take up.

You have to speculate to acummulate, Tony Bloom knows this, it's what made him as rich as he is today.

As excited as I am by this 'new era' and the optimism that, I'm totally with you, mate. I do not want us to end up in the shit because we've over-spent. What we need is another Bobby Z, a player on the cheap who we can develop into a goalscoring superstar. Here's hoping!

We have Barnes and we have Hoskins filling that role. We need someone with a bit of experience who can hit the ground running. I wouldn't want to go into this season with our choices of Barnes, Hoskins and a 19 year old with potential. We need someone at thier peak (or just past it), that we wont get a return on in terms of transfer fee, but might help get the best out of the younger players and get 15 goals as well.

Diego Forlan is now 32, is it total fantasy to hope that he just MAY sign for us for a year?

Now you're being ridiculous yourself, mentioning Craig Bellamy in the same breath as Crofts. It's not really worth an argument but I'd suggest Bellamy is a pretty high profile player who played in the 2nd division last season and you said that it couldn't happen in this era

look all I am saying is lets get this in perspective.

we have all on here at various times slagged off in a self rightous way other clubs for "spending beyond their means" and slagging off clubs who have owners who splash the cash....Abramovitch, Glaziers etc....now it looks as though we are doing the same, so I sincerely hope that we have the finances available to do this ( outside of Bloom) that can support such spending!

At the end of teh day, bloom built us a spankingly new horrendously expensive stadium, that Knight hinted the banks would not finance....so hopefullty our business model is based on income from football and the stadium, rather than asking bloom to turna card and finance buying players

wise chap

Exactly. That is how I saw the situation all along. Glenn Murray is ok in L1, but is too slow and fails to take too many chances for Gus's style of play and the Championship.

I'm getting excited about his replacement.

I also believe we'll see more progress this season from Ashley Barnes as well
