Gus attempts to calm down fans expectations about our budget

I use the same example EVERY time a topic like this arises but here I go:

No manager in their right mind will harp on about how cash rich he is in a transfer window. It would be suicidal.

In 1997 Kevin Keegan stupidly informed everyone how lucky he was at Newcastle to have a large budget for his transfers. Needless to say EVERY bid he made for a player was negotiated by the selling club as they new Toon could afford MUCH more.

KK ended up either not getting his targets or spending WAY over the odds.

So, WHY would a manager not downplay his finances? It's just common sense.

But the Amex gives us much more of an income than just gate money. Also I think that clubs are less prepared to splash/gamble with FFP looming
I'm not saying we are top spenders, but surely we must have an income towards the higher end of the Championship and I would imagine can offer competitive wages to players if Gus and Tony want to

But what you also have to bear in mind is that a number of the clubs- the three that were relegated last season, plus a few more who've been in the Premier League over the space of the last few seasons- are still receiving income on that basis in terms of parachute payments. £15 million a year for doing absolutely nothing but getting relegated?

So you've got Blackburn, Bolton and Wolves, plus Birmingham, Blackpool and Hull still on that list. Can't remember how long it is since Burnley were relegated, but they've had that for a few years now. Leeds get featured on TV every other week, so must be fairly well off as a result, Derby get crowds of 30,000, as will Sheffield Wednesday on occasion, etc etc.

I think what was interesting was when asked about our budget Gus or TB said that it would be the same as last year or a little bit more, but that it would be used differently.

I took that to mean more on wages/signing on fees (over the course of the contract) and less upfront on transfer fees, but that the net result would be more or less the same within an overall budget.

With free signings on Kusczcak, Bruno, I suspect that we have pushed the boat out slightly to get them.

Sure, I don't think we are at the top, but we must be at the higher end. Of course the parachute payments make it harder for any team to get that first promotion though.
I'd still wager that apart from perhaps the Reebok Stadium the Amex generates the highest income in the Championship.

It would not suprise me if we threw 500k signing on fees at Bruno and Kusczack, therefore keeping the weekly wage in line with our other top earners.

Yes they are marginally larger capacity stadiums, but FFS have you been to Hillsborough? You can't really tell me that you that ramshackle of a ground can generate anywhere near what the Amex can and does on non match days. The beauty of the Amex is that it has been built to provide MAXIMUM income for the club 365 days a year, not just 25 or so seasonal matchdays. Mollineux, for example, is currently undergoing redevelopment for this very reason.

Hillsborough Stadium, Sheffields leading conference and events venue. - Hillsborough Stadium, Sheffield's leading conference and events venue.

They have wedding fayres, conferences, dinners/discos, and other events much the same as we do. Not sure if they've held the Jehovah's Witness Convention yet though

That's the big money spinner though! Have you been to Hillsborough though? It's a shit hole - I honestly can't imagine it being an attractive location for larger spender companies...

Long time ago yeah, the stands are pretty run down, but suspect it's a lot nicer inside in the event rooms

Believe me, TB doesn't want to.

I would like to see where we are in the budget table. Last year we were supposedly 17th. I suspect we might be top 10 this season though?

Gus has already said that his budget is similar to last year's so how could we go up the table? There are three more clubs in the Championship with parachute payments so if anything we've probably moved down a couple of places.

The sensible ones do.

Others on here are so deluded. They think CMS/Vicente are on £10,000pw ffs!!

What amuses is me is how everyone has a nailed-on source who has come through for them before, and is high up in the club. For CMS in particular I've seen just about every number from 8k to 30k quoted on here, all from people convinced their source is correct. A guy at my work told me with absolute conviction that Lewis Dunk was earning 12 grand a week. I laughed in his face. All it proves is that nobody actually knows anything.
