Bought one for the Cream Tea cafe in town and redeemed it no problem - why?

Groupon are massive and highly reputable - you can buy with confidence.
Yes and no. Watchdog did a feature on them a while back - they basically wash their hands in cases where people have gone to redeem and the underlying supplier has massively underestimated demand and been unable to cope. You can imagine the kerfuffle involved in getting your money back when groupon are involved...

I've had no problems so far, but saw a 'food allergy testing' deal and over 800 hundred people had gone for it - as it was time limited, i just thought thats too much for them to deal with and didn't bother.

sounds about right - good service when you get what you want, but if you don't, they will be no hope in getting it resolved. Use a credit card will give you some protection, but it is tri-party laws so they don't have a legal obligation to help.

Yup, my experience has been good so far. And they do get some decent deals on there ...

I used my first Groupon voucher to take the girlfriend out for an upmarket anniversary dinner in London last week.

It was fantastic value for what we got, though we were a tad surprised that the deal didn't include the 12.5% service charge on our final bill, but that was more our fault for not checking out the small print.

So yes, they're great, but do check out the Ts & Cs to get a clear picture of what you'll be expected to pay.

I have bought two different groupons where this has happened and on both occasions Groupon have refunded me straightaway!
