Whilst I see where Herr Tubthumper is coming from in the fun of lists, we mostly all just wait patiently for other people to finish, so that we can say why we're right and their wrong. That may be why it is a particular enjoyment of us males.

It would seem that he may be mistaken about:
They’re not claiming it’s the definitive thread-closed list.
given that Laura Snapes tweeted: "The day is finally upon us. West End Girls is officially the greatest ever UK No 1." (my italics).

Presumably, given that the only measure available is actually number of records sold, the only thing that could be officially the greatest ever UK No 1. would be 'Candle in The Wind', a song so 'great' that it failed to make the top ten when sold on just it's own merits. If the journalists' response would be that this is not about sales, then why base your sample group on measurement of sales from a particular week?

What a load of bollocks that top 100 is. Rick Astley's 'Never gonna give you up' in front of Bohemian Rhapsody. Really?! Some good songs in there but no 'Waterloo sunset'? West End Girls at No 1. Heavy bias towards pop rather than rock songs...., utter bollocks. No 'Ace of Spades', 'Paranoid'.
Rant over, but bollocks all the same!

Impossible list to make or agree with as it is always down to taste, but at least its a decent mix of styles and eras. A couple of ones I havent heard at all or in a while as well.

Rod Stewarts "Da Ya Think Im Sexy" btw... what a sex symbol he would have been if he wasnt the ugliest man on the planet.

*cough* Bjorn (eyes too close together) Borg *cough*

AND the ****er couldn't singer.

Take your point but neither made No.1.

I had not seen that Tweet, but I’m certain she’s got her tongue in her cheek.

So have I.

Re-reading your post I now see that, think I was too focused on defending middle-aged people’s right to make lists!

Blimey,I wonder what song kept Paranoid from not being number 1?

It only reached number 4, so:

Band of Gold by Freda Payne,
You Can Get It If You Really Want It by Desmond Dekker &
Black Night by Deep Purple

Competition was pretty strong back then.

More of a travesty was that the greatest single ever made only reached number 2. Waterloo Sunset was held off the top by The Tremeloes 'Silence is Golden'. Also 'God Only Knows' was kept at number 2 by 'Yellow Submarine'. If you let the people choose they choose Barabbas (or awful novelty songs by massively overrated scousers).
