[Film] Greatest sci fi films

Erm why does it have to have those things? 1984, Brave new world, Jurassic Park.... None of that in those. Science fiction is about how humanity or society is affected by or changes/reacts to science and technology - it can include lasers and space ships and robots but star wars is just a fun fantasy setting where normal rules of the universe do not apply.

The best sci fi film I’ve ever seen is Interstellar.

The sci fi book series I most hope they adapt is the Red Rising series, which is peak sci fi.

Reading this thread and seeing the praise it gets I should probably give Interstellar another watch. I've only seen it once and though it was utterly dull.

Not mentioned yet but I've also enjoyed repeat plays of:

Prey (best of the Predator films since the original imo)

The Black Hole (loved this more than any of the Star Wars when I saw it at the cinema as a child. Nice and dark)

Predator has always been a favourite of mine. Prey was excellent. Given how some of the predator sequels have gone, I wasn't sure what to think beforehand, but I really enjoyed Prey.

Not a film, but I massively enjoyed the first series of Andor on Disney. I've not enjoyed any of the new Star Wars films. Except for Rogue One, which was a prequel.

I've been saying to friends who are into Star Wars, they shouldn't have tried to shoe horn in old characters to the new films. They have a rich enough world that they can create new characters with new stories, without having to rehash old paths. I think that's been proven with the quality of The Mandalorian and Andor which are both great.

Andor is particularly good though. The first series not even touching Jedi's at all. Its just a story of about people living in that world under Imperial rule. Its the best Star Wars story for a long time.

Source Code is a great film. I like the idea of being able to go back in time multiple times and learn from your mistakes until you get it right. Also liked the bit when he gets the really uptight stand up comic to do his routine in front of the passengers

So that definition would exclude Star Wars because, as we all know, it was a long time ago in a galaxy far far away, ie not the future!!

It is! They are a bit of a sub genre of sci-fi horror I guess, so maybe if that isn't your bag, but it definitely is mine. The franchise has been let down IMO by some of the later films being crap, but the first two are stone cold classics IMO.

It was apparently the first Disney film to be rated PG.

Are you confusing it with the Black Cauldron, which did make a massive loss on release a few years later?

Apologies it was in fact at that time the most expensive Disney film ever made. (It must be an age thing )

Yup that's the same as what I said. So not star wars. I like Star wars by the way, it's just not science fiction
