Great places in the UK to visit?

The last time I was in Whitley Bay, I was struck by the advert in one pub window for LIVE SKY FOOTBALL + HALF TIME STRIPPERS. The place is a class apart from other resorts.

That description covers virtually every pub and bar in the North-East, in my experience.

Had a few days up near Hadrians Wall a couple of years back. The central section is stunningly beautiful and the organisational powers and accomplishments of the Roman Empire are in stark contrast to the modern day Italian ruling elite. I fully intend to go back and walk the wall end to end at some point (without the kids).

North Devon's great- beautiful beaches, good surf and inland the countryside is dotted with cider farms.

The Norfolk coast is also a nice place to spend a few days. Decent beaches and fresh crab and oysters straight from the sea. Also a good place to see seals.

Glamping thats a new one, does it involve car parks and late nights?

Glamping is the future!!! It normally involves late nights and loads of bottles of pink fizz!!!!

Don't know if they strictly qualify as UK, but the Channel Islands are well worth a visit with Jersey at the top of the list.

Northumberland (stunning coast - a forgotten gem), the north Cornish coast (beautifull rugged scenery + plus my wife is from there, an "old wrecker" family!!), the Lake District (nuff said), Snowdonia (ditto), the Highlands (all of them!), the Borders (see Northumberland), Dartmoor (see Lake District), Dorset and of course Sussex!!!!

York, cracking city and just a stone's throw from some fine countryside
Snowdonia is a great place to visit although it has a habit of raining whenever I go anywhere near Wales.
North Devon coast, Woolacombe Bay area, good beaches.

Here's another vote for Falmouth. Quiet and old fashioned, but with loads of pubs, restaurants and other amenities. Easy train or boat ride up to the "big city" - Truro. And in the middle of the glorious Cornwall countryside for walks. Possibly down-market, but unlike a number of towns down there, it seems to be thriving.

What is it you don't like?

I guess I moved to Cornwall for the countryside rather than the towns. Falmouth is just heaving with people most of the time (interesting that you say it's "quiet"), so I just don't go there. I guess if I was still in my 20s, I'd probably like it more......

I've always preferred the North Coast to the South as well. Lots of fabulous beaches and cliffs. There's loads of good pubs and restaurants all over Cornwall, and most of the best are not in the big towns. You need a car down here, too, so the fact you can get a train to Falmouth doesn't make it any better. It's also student central, with the university expanding rapidly, so will only get worse on that front.

We're involved in a lot of regeneration work, but take your point about the lack of thriving towns down here. Truro, Hayle and Helston seem to be holding their own, but other than that, the outlook is generally bleak.

My Misses would call you an "Emmett" - you'll be all right as long as you don't claim to be "Cornish", drives her mad Emmetts claiming to be Cornish!!

Just noticed your location, so won't argue with most of what you say! Perhaps "quiet" wasn't the right word - "relaxed" might be better, compared to, er, Leicester. We did enjoy hopping on and of the train and boats, and used the car less than expected. Also take your point about out-of-town pubs and restaurants, but accommodation in town solves the problem of getting to bed after a few beers. We're still exploring Cornwall, having discovered it only a few years ago. Would love to retire somewhere down there - so good luck with the regeneration!
