We are heading towards a third season out of four finishing 15th place. We haven't looked like finishing higher than we currently are and Graham Potter has to win 2 more games to match Chris Hughtons tally. He does a lot of good things but a lot of people ignore his failings.

What makes me most angry about Potter, also Hughton in fact, is that they can’t/couldn’t turn a bottom 6 playing budget, into a final EPL placing of 14th or more.

Shirley, that is the definition of failure.

Agree with most of that, care to expand on the last sentence?

This is an extreme example but imagine a team has a battering ram up front, who feeds off crosses into the box, long balls etc.

But the team creates lots of cut backs, through balls etc.

Rather than setting up the team to create cut backs and through balls that the striker struggles with, the manager could use tactics that put more crosses in, more direct etc.

Shot in the dark here, could it be the quality of players we have up front? He has sorted everything apart from the forwards, I expect that to change if we stay up. Time will tell, maybe Maupay will come good he does quite a lot right and is still quite young

I don't think our attackers are that bad, even Maupay is decent. Potter is making it clear he is having trouble with Connelly as he keeps on saying that he should stop being too hard on himself. Potter has to sit down with him and figure out how to deal with that problem thats his job. Maupay needs 6 chances to score one goal Potter has to find away to make him more efficient thats his job. If he is as good a coach as people say, then thats where he needs to work his magic.

If we had a young Murray that would be a way to go, but we don’t. We don’t have anyone that’s anywhere close to a battering ram, more men with pointed sticks

We’ll never know but I suggest Klopp and Pep would struggle to do more than keep us up with our choice of forwards

So where is Potter showing his value if you think the manager should just achieve what his budget says? You know that it isn't as simple as that.

Yeah, that example above isn't relevant to us. It was just to illustrate that if the strikers are struggling to score, the manager can change the system to create different types of chances.

Maybe. but surely as a coach it is his job to make them as good as they can be, and you say yourself that Maupay should get better.

I genuinely can’t think how you change a system when strikers can’t take simple chances, without changing the strike force. I think we’ve tried all permutations except Zequiri and Tau

Maybe he has made them as good as they can be?

He is not a magician, regardless of his surname

That's why neither of us are managers ;)

And why TB shows no signs of being about to pull the trigger....maybe he will, I was as pissed off with CH at the end as some are with GP, but I was genuinely shocked at how it ended. Maybe lightning does strike in the same place twice, not long to find out.

Or, it may be a little early to judge some of our strikers.

Danny Welbeck at 30, is obviously that proven striker and as long as he stays fit will do a great job.

Maupay as a 24 year old striker in the Premier League is certainly capable and will hopefully get better, and in 6 years time I'll be able to safely say whether he's become a proven striker.

Obviously I couldn't say the same about 21 year old Zeqiri or Connolly, but I'm quite happy to tell you in 3 years time whether they are capable, and in 9 years time, whether they are a proven striker,

In fact, in a year's time, I could probably give a better indication of 3 of the 4

Of course not.

But if Potter wanted, he could use tactics that create different types of chances.

“Different types of chances”?

The style of play is creating a ton of openings of every kind.

The problem is missing the target, or making saveable attempts on target. Attempts are on a par with £800m squad Manure, but on target are on a par with Newcastle and Everton, whilst finishing is at CP and Newcastle levels.

The players construe to miss; penalties, half openings, just the goalie to beat and quality crosses.

Some people might level a load of things against Potter, the type of chances is new one.

Well played for getting this far without reading the core argument against hiring a gormless tvvat (and all his little yes men) with next to no track record at any kind of meaningful level on a stupidly long contract. Are you TB by any chance? ???

you're upset, aren't you,

i can tell

You have to remember that this is the poster who thought Glenn Murray was 1 in 10 Glenn and that Leon Knight was alright. He doesn’t have a great record in spotting talent :lolol:

In fairness Knight was a great player until his ego ran away with him

Rather than start the entire process all over again, it would be easier just to buy a striker.

Potter’s job is safe. That’s going to p off some posters who live in a parallel universe where Potter’s been a complete disaster from start to finish. I just don’t feel gloomy at all about the club, far from it. A couple of quality signings this summer and imho next season we’ll progress further. More goals scored, more wins.

It's all very well having a lot of shots but that's irrelevant if the chance of scoring is low.

As it happens, our xG per shot is 0.10, which is in line with most other clubs in the league.

West Ham have had 40 shots less than us but scored 17 more goals.

Maybe their players are simply outperforming their xG or maybe Moyes has a system that creates chances that suits them. Do you think Soucek would score 9 goals in our system?

I'm not bashing Potter or saying he should change his system. Just saying that it's not black and white that 'our strikers aren't good enough'.

I love Potter more than anyone other than Swansman

The ball is in TB’s court, I hope he smashes a first time winner rather than hitting the net after letting the ball bounce

The vast majority of Albion fans I believe are behind the manager. But there continues to be a core Potter out group and a slightly more on the fence pragmatic bunch.

I can actually empathise with the latter, they’re looking purely at results and saying “hey, this bloke hasn’t improved our points tally that much”. I personally think there’s a bigger picture to look at with a more long term view but they care about the bottom line and short term mainly. Not my thing, but I can sort of see their point.

But the die hard Potter outs I continue to be baffled by. You’ve decided he’s not good enough and there’s no way back. When asked, where should a Brighton manager finish in the PL they have no answer. No regard to any positive that GP has brought to the club, and nearly every time without fail Eddie Howe wanders into the conversation. Every time.
