I'm not a fan of Potter at all, didn't like the style of play, but agree it did take us places. I didn't like the dissing of the fans (see below), and whilst I didn't agree with the boo-ing, he needed a bit of a lesson in fan management. That below wasn't a one off...

RDZ has taken 91 points from 61 games as Brighton manager and we have been the 8th best team points-wise in that time. The fairest way to compare RDZ to Potter is probably to look at Potter's final 61 games, as you can't really go back to Potters first seasons - as the squad obviously wasn't as good then. So...

In Potter's final 61 games we took 86 points, and were also 8th best team in the league during that time.

So the records are actually very similar, with RDZ being slightly better.

Where you could argue that De Zerbi edges it is that we've sold more of our star players whilst he's been here: Caicedo, Mac Allister, Sanchez, and Trossard all sold under De Zerbi. Additionally, Bissouma and Cucurella had only just been sold when he came in, so you could fairly argue that he was more affected by those sales than Potter was.

I think Potter was a good manager who actually didn't have that much luck. I've never seen so many one-sided draws and defeats as that penultimate full season we had with him, and I doubt I ever will. But I would also say that RDZ is a better manager. If RDZ was replaced with Potter, I very much suspect it would be more of the same, with the quality of recruitments determining how successful he was rather than his management skills.

That were talking about this 3 years later is imho ultimate proof of both how little he had to say and how decent his manner was in media generally because its just a frustrated manager throwing away some wound up comments everyone made a meal out of it imho. Funny in many cases those who bang on about it are the sames ones saying we cant expect to win a game now because we played Hereford Torquay and Portsmouth in the 90s

Funny in many cases those who bang on about it are the sames ones saying we cant expect to win a game now because we played Hereford Torquay and Portsmouth in the 90s

eh? Not sure I'm following where ever you're going there...I wasn't even here in the 90's so haven't a scooby why thats related...

Anyhow, I'm not mad on Potter and really not tracking where he goes anymore, so if he's turned down Ajax, good for him.....to each their own...

He is so going to United. Rated by Ratcliffe & Brailsford and a good working relationship with Ashworth. Wants to be a head coach rather than manager which is a key part of the Ineos strategy - because they’ll sort the players and GPott will just coach them. That’ll be made clear to the mass-whinging United fanbase when he’s appointed… maybe.

We'll never know whether if it was A.N.Other manager who took over from Chris Hughton instead of Potter whether he'd have turned the ship around far quicker with the wealth of talent at his disposal. Personally I reckon Potter's input was fairly incidental to the turnaround
That’s a lot of revisionism for one post.

The last year/18 months under CH in the Prem were an awful experience. I mean truly awful. The standard of football was horrible, the style was awful, we set up so negatively and hoped for a draw every game. There was no pace anywhere to be seen, no guile outside of Propper and Gross, and we desperately needed to change manager.

Potter did a fantastic job for us, even if he didn’t get everything right, and even if he didn’t leave in the best manner or ingratiate himself with us.

I personally think RDZ is a more rounded manager who took some of the players up one or two levels, but that shouldn’t undermine the job he did for us, just as my assessment of CH above isn’t my overall reflection of what he brought to our club for much of his time here, particularly the first 2-3 seasons.

Ah, so this is the now infamous 25 sec clip that so many have an opinion about! Must admit I haven't seen it before! I take it that he's protecting his players which I personally think is a good thing (and GP is known for it). I don't see any upsetting in that "history lesson bit" either, having just played the opponents of the pitch, overtaken Manure and sitting eight in the table (according to the text, don't know if it's correct). I know another manager that happily want everybody to know that "we have to remember we are Brighton" when he thinks it's suitable. A first world problem.

When does the monthly payment from Chelsea run its cause?

It apparently stops immediately if he gets a job, hence why he’s turned a few jobs down.

Older Albion fans will recall that Barry Lloyd’s ‘mutual consent‘ departure in December 93 consisted of him signing an NDA and 24 monthly payments finishing in January 1996, ironically they were still paying him after his successor Liam Brady had left.

Potter brought this on himself. The fact that he reacted to a few, and I mean a few fans dotted about, who booed, shows how insecure and unsuitable he was. The vast majority of us applauded the players off even though it was a frustrating match. For him to blather on about history lessons was pathetic. Most of us know very well where we had come from but to suggest that fans don't have a right to make their feelings known is simply ridiculous. I notice he never made a comment about the thousands of Chelsea fans booing frequently in his reign there. He either realised his mistake (if so it confounds your argument) or he was too cowardly to mention it. He's more suited to a smaller League like the Swedish or Championship as his fragile ego can't take the pressure of a few disgruntled murmurings. That's why there was carnage at Chelsea and that's why if he ever goes on to be the England manager or United, he will probably struggle with the same issues.

Precisely. I was increasingly sitting in silence and leaving earlier and earlier, 70 minutes, 65 minutes.....

However....

We have had one decent and two excellent managers in the last 7 years. I find it difficult to seek out first world problems at the Albion when the club is largely bringing me massive chunks of pleasure on match days.

What a load of bollocks, RDZ came into a team that had finally clicked. Finishing 9th after several seasons of relegation battles not to mention the turnaround when football started again after the shutdown was a major turning point. Sure RDZ shifted things up a gear, but to accuse Potter of not achieving much is bloody absurd.
Several seasons of relegation battles? we have never been in the bottom three since returning to the top flight. The first four seasons not much difference in the points won.
We then had a mid table despite not winning a game for half a season a slight improvement.
Potter couldn’t get a team up to beat Palace our only PL manager not to, some people may have liked him for me I’ve never been so bored watching football it was that predictable.

We stayed up with 2 points in 2019 how is that not a relegation battle
