We've been saying since he was in charge at the Amex, that he would be on the FA's radar after Southgate. I could definitely see him as England boss, although he did always say he wasn't interested in international management. He got in via the back door. U21 manager, stepped up after Big Sam was sacked. It was only supposed to be temporary but he won a few games so FA went down the easy route and made it permanent.
