Wow. The bare minimum. Congratulations to him. Still doesn't excuse him going after us on occasion though.

Why not? The fans at the Amex have been absolutely shit for most of this season. The worst atmosphere in the league.

It's amazing how many of our fans are happy to sit on their hands in silence, making no effort to lift the team, and then get all precious about an off the cuff comment from the manager that should barely even register as a slight against them.

It's not like he's saying "The fans are so quiet, they're not helping the situation at all, if they would just give us some backing it might help improve our chances", is it? Which is probably what he wants to say, as it is absolutely true.

Football fans are so weird sometimes.

I am starting to think he's too sensitive to be a top half Premier League coach. Precious after booing v Leeds and now this. Heaven forbid fans having expectation that we might score the odd goal.

TB we were only saying this in the pub Saturday night, has he been over promoted beyond his capabilities?

Malcolm Allison
Steve McLaren
Brian Kidd

All won league titles and multiple trophies as coaches (no 2's) but all failed at management at the top level.

LOL

Have you been to Arsenal? Heard Burnley?

And our hardcore fans go away as well as home where we're one of the best in the league. Look at Norwich on Saturday. Half an allocation and no noise at all. Can't blame them though, watching that shit every week, Shit that we couldn't beat. Twice.

The Amex is far from great but it is in no way the worst in the league. Though, to improve it, I do wish the North East crew and North West crew would sing the same song as each other. Or maybe attempt to move over to join the others?

We did shoot on Saturday, 31 times in fact, yet we didn’t score !!
Isn’t Potter saying that if we perhaps had one more pass then we could have been in a better position to score or at least hit the target ?
Makes sense to me or am I missing something?

Not missing something but there are different perspectives.

How many of those were clear opportunities and didn't have most of Norwich team in the way though? How many saves did Krul have to make? If we had only had half as many shot but there had been more on target the discussion would have been about why we let Krul go.

One more pass just gives the defence more time to get organised. We are too slow in moving from defence to attack and it makes us easy to defend against.

Viewed the other way, one less pass may have meant fewer defenders in the way and more chance of scoring but that doesn't fit the narrative for those who still believe in the cult of Potterball

Yes and yes. And yes our away fans are good but I said the Amex is the worst atmosphere in the league, not our away following.

It has been awful for most of the season. That said, I thought it was actually better than usual on Saturday. I do think a large part of the problem is that the North Stand is too small, but there's not a lot we can do about that.

There is absolutely no need for him to say what he did though. No need at all.

It happens at every ground at almost every game. It's as irrelevant as singing "the referees a :wanker: " when he's got the decision correct or "Going down Old Shoreham Road" when we now play at the Amex. One of the first things a professional player should have in his head is that his decision making is WAY better than a drunk bloke 80 yards away, even if that player is Solly March.

Surely you can concede that when confidence is low, or pressure felt, then decision making can be more problematic? That's partly the thing about playing at home isn't it - the baying mob looking to influence decisions which I agree has minimal impact, until a player/referee/assistant referee is feeling under-pressure or lacking a bit of confidence. That's the only point he, GP, is trying to describe I think.. players are under pressure/lacking confidence at the moment, they are at risk of making poor decisions and the noise of a crowd can impact that. Whether it should or it shouldn't is irrelevant - its often the difference between the top/best performers and the rest. Ronaldo couldnt give a flying @*%$ what anyone thinks hence he can block out or even thrive on that. This is what GP refers to when saying its "something we are working through". That's my take anyway.

Maybe Potter needs to adopt the Gerrard approach to players.

Gerrard came out after their loss on Saturday and said it's down to the players to show they match the clubs ambition and if they can't, he'll go out and spend in the summer and if they can they'll be part of the journey. Maybe some tough love from Potter is needed - which he has done in other ways before

I reckon this is more feasible when you have owners that are pumping money into the transfer budget and are clearly willing & able to spend significantly to upgrade. Otherwise, it's an empty threat.

Imagine if Potter wanders into the dressing room and tells them all he'll ship them out and buy replacements if they don't step up. Then he's off to Paul Barber's office... "Alright Barbs? I've just put half the squad on the transfer list. Are we good to spend the £300m it'll take to buy Premier League ready upgrades?"

It's going to have to be organic improvement for us and a big part of that is coaching to improve what we already have. Potter's style is to coach, to support, to reduce the pressure the players are under and to create an environment of psychological safety where performance is not negatively affected by the fear of doing something wrong. Switching from that to telling players they're out on their ear unless they improve is quite a leap, goes against what he's been saying and destroys the trust between him and the squad (as much as it seems like an obvious thing to try).

It’s like being told off by a headmaster. Next he’ll have a go at the giggling at the back after watching our footballers trying to find their way to goal.

If everyone has to stop, think, dither, and have 3 touches each minimum, we're never going to create clear chances, the defense can walk back into position and the midfield have time to crawl back behind the ball to help before we're 'ready' to shoot.

Fair enough. We've not done Arsenal yet this season. Maybe it's turned into a cauldron of seething noise.

The point about away fans goes with my point about the split singers in the North. Clearly we do have the ability to make a lot of noise when everyone's mixed up and the singers are closer together. And I agree about NS size (look at Spurs' Kop, it's magnificent). But when we do get going and the whole North stand sings and the West Upper join in it's a lot noiser than the two I mentioned or Everton for that matter.

Ok and there is nothing that indicates that getting rid of the ball as quickly as possible leads to more goals, entertainment or excitement. Dont think Norwich made a backward or sideward pass all game, if you're lucky you'll get that with your next manager.

C'mon, our build up play isn't slow. It's patient!

The split singers thing has been a problem in the North Stand since the Amex opened. It isn't hard to solve if the club really wanted to. Plenty mocked Palace for moving their 'ultras' together at the cost of other fans, but something like that would make the North Stand so much better. It would piss a few people off, but I don't really get why you'd buy a ticket in the North Stand if you don't like singing or making a noise.

all failed at management at the top level.

Has Potter failed ? Blimey.
He's kept Albion in the Premier League. For three years now.
That might be failure for some - perhaps even Bloom might have run out of patience - but then Dyche (relegation probably x 2 ) and Howe (relegation) must also be top level failures let alone all the managers who couldn't keep their teams out of the bottom three or stay in the PL for longer than a season or two.

If you think about what gets fans off their seat and how we play can you really blame them? Players like Knockhaert get the fans going not March checking back and hitting the first man every time he attempts a cross.

This thread quite clearly shows the difference in what GP and what NSC wants Brighton to be.

GP wants Brighton to play a similar football as Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham. Most Northstandchatters wants Brighton to play like Newcastle, Burnley, Everton and Watford.

https://www.premierleague.com/stats/top/clubs/backward_pass

NSC wants Brighton to be a team that wins and scores goals. We couldn't really care how that's achieved.

GP also wants Brighton to be a team that wins and scores goals. He wants that to be achieved via a certain style of play.

I guarantee you City, Liverpool and Chelsea fans wouldn't enjoy the backward passing as much if it yielded no goals or wins.
