Whilst I sympathise for the Ukrainians £350 a month to let them live rent free is a bit of an insult. I live alone which means my council tax would increase. Plus god knows how much my gas/electric/and water usage would also increase. Would any NSC people host for this amount. Discuss.

The scheme isn't for you then, we will be making the offer of accommodation, and would do even if there was no financial assistance. I appreciate not everyone would be able to do that even if they have the space, and if you can't afford to help, that is fine, just do what you can do.

Those people standing on Berlin and other stations are doing it for nothing, so to get some money to cover a few expenses etc is excellent.

It’s a headline grabbing statement which masks the depressingly cruel and confused approach the UK has adopted. Contrast this to the clear, simple and welcoming “open sanctuary” which most of mainland Europe has adopted.

Meanwhile my neighbour opposite is no closer to getting her 80+ years old parents (one of whom has a valid visa) into the UK from the hostel they have fled to in Prague leaving everything they owned in Kyiv. And that is despite all their efforts, both in the UK and the Czech Republic for the last week.

You’d have to wonder what would happen with todays society in WW2. Kids being sent around the country during the Blitz.

Funny old world though, I remember when the building opposite the Thomas A Becket had the serious fire and structurally it was unsafe, locals couldn’t go out of their way any more to be seen to do stuff - house the families, get together toys , toiletries etc.

I won’t be doing this as my circumstances don’t really allow it - but I won’t be walking around today shouting about why I won’t / can’t / shouldn’t [emoji2375]

When children were evacuated, it was compulsory for those who had a spare room, in the country, to take them in.
There were some horrendous stories of children being made to work on farms, as domestic help or even being beaten & starved. Parents came and took them back to the cities. Checks on welfare were sketchy at best.
Schools taught local children for half a day, and evacuees for the other half.
Rose tinted memories of the blitz spirit be blowed.

Does anyone know what you're expected to provide when hosting a refugee - is it just a spare room, including rent and bills? Do you need to provide food etc as well or does the refugee get separate support for that?

Happy clapping everyone, the government are great. It takes time to organise these things, it’s not like we’ve had weeks and weeks of Russia building a presence on the border to organise a response to inevitable refugees. About time we cut this government some slack, they’re really trying their best. Yay. Or something.

I don't think that taking in a refugee will affect anyone's council tax - refugees will be exempt. I think this is a good idea as in empowers us as individuals to do something directly if we chose to do so. It may be better than just placing people in "centres" or leaving them to fend for themselves.
