Wow!
Your loathing of the United Kingdom knows no bounds.
Shame on you.

I don’t loathe the United Kingdom. I loathe it’s present government. Claiming the leader is the embodiment of the nation is the kind of shit stunt Putin is pulling. It can get in the bin.

Whilst I sympathise for the Ukrainians £350 a month to let them live rent free is a bit of an insult. I live alone which means my council tax would increase. Plus god knows how much my gas/electric/and water usage would also increase. Would any NSC people host for this amount. Discuss.

Pretty sure it’s optional, babe.

Cryarsing there’s no need for that. My basic point was I could potentially be out of pocket especially as I am retired and things are getting harder financially in this current climate. But thank you for your input.

The scheme isn't for you then, we will be making the offer of accommodation, and would do even if there was no financial assistance. I appreciate not everyone would be able to do that even if they have the space, and if you can't afford to help, that is fine, just do what you can do.

Exactly. It’s like being accused of hating BHAFC because you criticised Bill Archer. Moronic.

I suspect there will be far more offers of accommodation than can be filled, and that there will be better offers than that which my household can make, but I really want the Government to be so inundated with offers that they can see how welcome refugees would be.

It's an excellent scheme

Those people standing on Berlin and other stations are doing it for nothing, so to get some money to cover a few expenses etc is excellent.

Anyone who's viewing this as a potential commercial tenancy arrangement where they feel like they aren't getting enough money need to consider whether they have humanity about them

So where can I find this online or will it become "live" tomorrow?

Also from Sky News:

"Mr Gove is proposing that a UK sponsor - an individual, charity, community group or businesses - will be able to nominate a named Ukrainian person or family to stay in their home."

How will I nominate a "named Ukrainian person"?

I don’t know but I’d like to nominate Miss Ukraine to come and live with me

It all seems like yet another pisspoor attempt by Government to try and pretend it’s doing something when in reality it’s doing virtually **** all

It’s a headline grabbing statement which masks the depressingly cruel and confused approach the UK has adopted. Contrast this to the clear, simple and welcoming “open sanctuary” which most of mainland Europe has adopted.

Meanwhile my neighbour opposite is no closer to getting her 80+ years old parents (one of whom has a valid visa) into the UK from the hostel they have fled to in Prague leaving everything they owned in Kyiv. And that is despite all their efforts, both in the UK and the Czech Republic for the last week.

Maybe this Government should concentrate on getting Ukrainian refugees into the UK, rather than stupid f***ing headline grabbing shit.

But apparently I should be ashamed for thinking that

Just another soundbite where Johnson knows that this little chance of actually paying out too much money, but it enables him to continue with his lies of Britain leading the world in assistance to Ukraine. Whereas in reality Johnson is like a teenage who wasn't invited to the party, but goes any way, and everyone else is too polite to throw him out. Johnson that goes on and on about how great the party was.

How many more times, it was a work meeting! :lolol:

You’d have to wonder what would happen with todays society in WW2. Kids being sent around the country during the Blitz.

‘Well I’m not taking them in, shouldn’t have kids if you can’t look after them’

‘What about the extra utilities they’ll use, how am I going to pay for that’

Etc

Funny old world though, I remember when the building opposite the Thomas A Becket had the serious fire and structurally it was unsafe, locals couldn’t go out of their way any more to be seen to do stuff - house the families, get together toys , toiletries etc.

I won’t be doing this as my circumstances don’t really allow it - but I won’t be walking around today shouting about why I won’t / can’t / shouldn’t [emoji2375]

When children were evacuated, it was compulsory for those who had a spare room, in the country, to take them in.
There were some horrendous stories of children being made to work on farms, as domestic help or even being beaten & starved. Parents came and took them back to the cities. Checks on welfare were sketchy at best.
Schools taught local children for half a day, and evacuees for the other half.
Rose tinted memories of the blitz spirit be blowed.

Perhaps it would be better if the Government didn’t do anything. It would seemingly make people on this thread much happier. Luckily though there will be people in this country who will have their wish to take in refugees facilitated so perhaps NSC can move on to another way of making negative political capital out of a good news story.

Does anyone know what you're expected to provide when hosting a refugee - is it just a spare room, including rent and bills? Do you need to provide food etc as well or does the refugee get separate support for that?

Happy clapping everyone, the government are great. It takes time to organise these things, it’s not like we’ve had weeks and weeks of Russia building a presence on the border to organise a response to inevitable refugees. About time we cut this government some slack, they’re really trying their best. Yay. Or something.

I don't think that taking in a refugee will affect anyone's council tax - refugees will be exempt. I think this is a good idea as in empowers us as individuals to do something directly if we chose to do so. It may be better than just placing people in "centres" or leaving them to fend for themselves.
