Fantastic stuff, Drumstick! But, to do the Albion anthem full justice, the Amex PA system really does – just for this one song – need to be cranked right up! That way, fans will not only be able to get the speed right, but sing in the correct key too. Then, there's absolutely no need to change key in midstream, as always happens now.

As for the proper words, for anyone still needing them, these are the original ones from the first published version in 1907. I've added the Albion chorus – including, naturally – going up AND WE'LL win the cup!

1st verse
Now is the time for marching, Now let your hearts be gay
Hark to the merry bugles Sounding along our way.
So let your voices ring my boys, And take the time from me
And I’ll sing you a song as we march along
Of Sussex by the Sea!

Chorus
For we're the men from Sussex, Sussex by the Sea
We plough and sow and reap and mow
And useful men are we
And when you go to Sussex, Whoever you may be
You may tell them all that we stand or fall
For Sussex by the Sea!

Albion Refrain
Good old Sussex by the Sea!
Good old Sussex by the Sea!
Oh we're going up And we'll win the Cup
For Sussex by the Sea!

Cut music – fans, now unaccompanied
Good old Sussex by the Sea!
Good old Sussex by the Sea!
Oh we're going up And we'll win the Cup
For Sussex by the Sea!

you forgot 'Altogether now!' can't miss that bit out!

and how great would it be to have a passionate albion leader to help us along....

I know it has been tried before but this time I will not stop until I either have a mental breakdown or die.

Starting at Millwall tomorrow in the concourse Brighton4Cambridge3 and I along with members of the NSK will be singing GOSBTS at it's correct speed.

From then on the NSK will do the same in the NS concourse from West Ham onwards. I will see if I can get lyric sheets sorted for this also.

Once the concourses have mastered it we can move it onto the stands.

If I do manage to sort out lyric sheets Brighton4Cambridge3 has said he will hand some out in the WSU so please do your bit up there.

NSK or not let's not moan and whine and lets just get this done. Once we have done this then maybe we can work on other songs.

Which lyrics are you using? are they the same?

Thunder Bolt

Silly old bat
It BAFFLES me that people cannot even CLAP in time to the tune as the players come out. How can you not even clap in time FFS. Good luck, I hope you can get in going.

You are going to have to keep trying it over and over until the speedtards get the message.

The clapping is the cause of the problem because as the clapping gets faster and faster, so the singing then speeds up to catch the clapping. Try clapping slowly and it MAY slow the singing down. I hope you succeed.

Ant a friend of mine from the NSK will be bringing some of the ones previously handed out to be used at Millwall.

He said we will add 'Slow it down mission' onto the ones to be handed out at the Amex so I guess he will print new ones in which case any lyrics could be used.

I thought the lyrics were 'and when you go FROM Sussex......' instead of to Sussex!
Please correct me if i'm wrong!
You may see that line on the internet, but it's the classic example of an error being e-repeated until it gains a spurious legitimacy.

But Ward-Higgs' original score - as published in 1907 by Herman Darewski - and which I have, definitely runs "And when you go to Sussex,Whoever you may be"

ie, implying that it's visitors to Sussex who can return home and tell all their friends that Sussex people "stand or fall For Sussex by the Sea!"

Are both versions valid due to the age of the song ?

This would have been more pertinent in the 1914-1918 war with the troops.

DEFO when you go TO Sussex...

Also, if people are going to sing the footy version, can they at least get that right. It is 'And we're going AND WE'LL WIN THE CUP' not 'TO WIN THE CUP'.

That said, lyrics sheets are NAFF. Just get it printed in the programme and TSLR.

thanks for that interesting information... my instinct has been towards "when you go FROM Sussex, WHEREVER you may be" to fit with soldiers going off to foreign fields - but I can see how these things get Chinese whispered when copied out and it would be nice to be true to the original...

Just scrap the clapping. Make it all about the words and the tempo. It'd actually sound like a new song and people might get it.

Excellent idea though, if you can get 100 people all doing it slowly, and do it a couple of times a match then it will happen. Good luck everyone.

Gillivers Travels, you may remember me having been in contact previously with you on the subject of SBTS.

Never mind the supposed lyrics (Going up and we will win the cup etc. (which is no longer at all appropriate) There is sadly one further problem and that is the key in which it is performed by ' whichever band' . I think it is recorded in B Flat which is why no bugger at the Amex is actually able to sing along anyway as no-one can actually reach the high notes when the teams are coming out. So, it would be better if we could have a rendition in a slightly lower key. How we achieve that God knows.

Sorry to sound so pedantic but, if you don't believe me listen to what happens as the teams come out, no-one can reach the higher notes.

It really needs to be in a slightly lower key.

No-one more than me would love to hear this done properly !

No one at the club seems to give a toss about SBTS or to have any clue about how to get it working properly. We can chat away about it on here endlessly (as we do) but I cannot understand why the people who matter are so rubbish about it.

1. Record a brass band playing it in a lower key that the average bloke can sing to
2. Play said recording at the maximum allowed volume
3. Put the words up on the big screens

Why, oh why, is this not happening?

From the copy of the 1907 score I have, the key is clearly C major. And the cover states that SBTS is a 'military marching song', intended to be sung by troops on the move.

The problem with Albion fans' own efforts is that, on hearing the band, they instinctively start one octave higher, only to find themselves screeching by the 3rd line.

To hear Sussex by the Sea being sung as always intended, listen to this now-famous recording of soldiers from 1991. It's set in the key of B Flat - as it is at the Amex - but the squaddies start low down, and have no trouble at all completing the song without the embarrassing emergency key change that we've all become used to.

So we don't need to change the band track at all, as long as we start off singing low. (Having said that, modern music software makes it very simple to transpose any tune to a different key, while retaining the original tempo.)

As you say, all that is needed is for the matchday production team at the club to take this task on.

GT

The Hyperlink has it, that is absolutely exactly what is required - the need is to get them to start , as you say, an octave lower and perhaps it may come automatically in due course.

I truly don't know what to do to reach the club, having previously tried 'Ask the Club' and privately e-mailed BBC Sussex - The potential is absolutely massive !

Great idea. Remember it's not everybody else who sings it too fast, it's YOU. Yes, you reading this thread, you're the guilty party. Sing it at the correct speed, don't sing it too fast and that way you won't make everybody else go too fast as well.

And as others have said if the 'football' lyrics are to be printed then it's "Going up AND WE'LL win the Cup" not the nonsensical "To win the cup" - although I really prefer the original "Stand or fall" version.

I know a proper trumpet player who would love to play GOSBTS in the west stand upper....Do stewards check for trumpets on entry?

I'm sure many on here would have an issue with this but I can't see the club being to anti it so long as he got permission.

Just a bounce anyway for the daytime NSC'ers! People have to not only wish it good luck but get involved and lend your slow timed voice to the rest of us until it spreads. Top work
