To what extent was he a success at the SFA and, more recently, at Rangers?

If he gets the job and it all goes tits up Rangers styleee please feel free to balme me.

I mentioned the role to the father in law who then called Gordon who had no idea the role was avaliable. He loves the club, the city and wants a move back south.

Maybe im biased but i think he would be suitable. He has the top job at the SFA and a very high position at Rangers (although not responsible for the money problems they had) - also has a high profile in the game which casn only be positive for the club

I for one would like to see him get the job. He's a smashing bloke and , it would seem, more than qualified.

We met him at Gary Hart's testimonial and he asked me if he was forgiven for that miss, bless!

I cant see how he wouldnt be the outstanding applicant.

How many of the other candidates would have been head of a national FA.

His work with the SFA was lauded as fresh & invebntive as a result his voice carries great weight in the higher echelons of footballing circles.

Add to that his links with the club & its surely a no brainer.

Certainly not a jobs for the boys thing

I am interested in how the Argus know he has applied. Not sure if going public is a good thing. Gordon Smith is a smashing guy who has a great feeling for the Albion. Was previously an Agent and who i think helped Rangers financially by walking away from his job. Having read his autobiography he seems to be a very genuine honest guy, and a great knowledge of football. Having met and spoken to Gordon on several occasions he has the Albion at heart. If he is the best candidate then i for one will be extremely happy. Good luck Gordon.

The Scottish FA though. We wouldn't be that bothered if he'd been head of another association of an equivalent standard. Like Luxembourg or the Faroe Islands.

I'm only 25 so I obviously wasn't around for the cup final, but my main opinion on it based on countless video clips is that his chance was actually a fairly hard one and that he's been seriously hard done over the years purely because the famous commentary that accompanied it has meant it's never disappeared. There is no way it was the virtual open goal many make out.
Very much this. It was only the circumstances and the memorable commentary line that made it so famous - absolutely nothing like the many "open goal" misses there have been.

Someone might be able to help me out here but I remember seeing a remarkably similar chance/save in an Albion game only this year - I think it might have been in the first game against Doncaster...?

It's often also forgotten that Manchester United had a very good chance to win it in the last few minutes of normal time.

I would genuinely be interested to know how his role at the Scottish FA is perceived to have gone (ie was he deemed a success?), and also to what extent that qualifies him for the Albion position. After all, they're not the same role. Presumably the Director of Football is responsible for the structure of things on the football side, and (I think?) for transfers etc.

Not intended to be a criticism of Smith for a second, I'm just querying the fact that some here seem to be suggesting he's the perfect fit. I just want the best man, whoever that is, hopefully someone impressive enough to lure high quality players here that Poyet has identified.

I prefer to remember his glorious header in the Cup Final. I played golf with Gary Bailey last year at a corporate golf day and made a point of telling him that he dived the wrong way and got very lucky indeed.

He didn't do an awful lot wrong technically tbh. His first touch was not perfect but at that stage of the game it's understandable. On another day it could have gone under Bailey, just one of dem ting.

I would like the appointment to be a figurehead at the Albion, with PR responsabilities, not just backroom ones.

Perry did a lot of press in the past and he's off, Ken Brown never really engaged with fans/press, and perhaps Tony Bloom wants to take a step back from the public facing stuff.

Smith has an impressive CV but also a really good manner with the press, fans etc.

Seems like a good fit.

Its NOT the Director of Football though. there is no such post at the Albion. Its the role of Chief Exec that he's up for. (Ken Brown's job?)

Ken Brown was the Managing Director; Martin Perry was the Chief Executive.

Now that Falmer is built, there's no longer the need for the two separate roles, and I believe they're being combined into one. The post is currently held - on an interim basis - by Derek Chapman. Martin will retire when the stadium is complete and the Training Centre built.

The closest we have to a Director of Football is probably 'Head of Football Operations'. That post is currently held by David Burke.

I doubt we'll be getting many Celtic players here if Gordon gets the nod. Still would be a great appointment and apart from that would make the rest of Scotland into our feeder team
