To what extent was he a success at the SFA and, more recently, at Rangers?
That's exactly how the mind goes though doesn't it. A friend of my dad can vividly recall naval maneouvres from 1944, but isn't sure if yesterday was Monday or Friday.
I cant see how he wouldnt be the outstanding applicant.
How many of the other candidates would have been head of a national FA.
His work with the SFA was lauded as fresh & invebntive as a result his voice carries great weight in the higher echelons of footballing circles.
Add to that his links with the club & its surely a no brainer.
Certainly not a jobs for the boys thing
Very much this. It was only the circumstances and the memorable commentary line that made it so famous - absolutely nothing like the many "open goal" misses there have been.I'm only 25 so I obviously wasn't around for the cup final, but my main opinion on it based on countless video clips is that his chance was actually a fairly hard one and that he's been seriously hard done over the years purely because the famous commentary that accompanied it has meant it's never disappeared. There is no way it was the virtual open goal many make out.

Someone might be able to help me out here but I remember seeing a remarkably similar chance/save in an Albion game only this year - I think it might have been in the first game against Doncaster...?
I would genuinely be interested to know how his role at the Scottish FA is perceived to have gone (ie was he deemed a success?), and also to what extent that qualifies him for the Albion position. After all, they're not the same role. Presumably the Director of Football is responsible for the structure of things on the football side, and (I think?) for transfers etc.
Not intended to be a criticism of Smith for a second, I'm just querying the fact that some here seem to be suggesting he's the perfect fit. I just want the best man, whoever that is, hopefully someone impressive enough to lure high quality players here that Poyet has identified.
Its NOT the Director of Football though. there is no such post at the Albion. Its the role of Chief Exec that he's up for. (Ken Brown's job?)
