Good morning - IT help please!

Okay all you IT support guys out there .... yep looking at at least four of you!!!

I think I am quite computer literate but got a real problem I can't solve and it's driving me nuts!

Over the past couple of months I have been unable to download any pix from the internet on my home computer (at work I can successfuly download the very same images).

Whenever I try to download an image on my home PC (ie by right clicking on it and choosing save) it only offers me the option of saving as an .ART file or .GIF - there is no JPeg option to save at all! Hence when I try to open the image my PC tells me I don't have a recognised application to open the file! Yet these same images are often Jpegs to start with and at work I can save and open them as JPegs.

Can anyone please help.

are you sure you are not just trying to download the thumbnail and not the full image

Can you try and do a "save as" and then save as a jpeg?

Save it as a GIF in the first instance and then re-save it as a JPEG once it's on your hard-drive? That's all I can think of.

No it's the full image Dave .... I have exactly the same XP set-up at work and at home, yet when I save the image at work it gives me the jpeg option to save ... yet at home that is not even an option ... I can only save as .ART or .GIF .... it's really odd and I can't figure out what must have changed on my home PC settings, cos this has only been a problem since about Xmas!

There is a bug in XP which kicks in once your cache and temporary internet files folders are very full. On my machine it only allows you to save images as a .bmp file.

If you go to Internet Properties and look for Temporary Internet Files, then delete the files, close Internet Explorer, then when you re-open IE you can save as the correct format.

If it's the same bug it will work, if it's a different one, oviously it won't!

dont increase the cache size!

Let XP do it itself.

We have many problems with people messing about with cache sizes on XP as our main roll out ( 15,000 PC's ) are XP

If the problem is as suggested, I can recommend a great free program called Window Washer. It allows you to clear out Temporary Internet Files, Cache, Program History, Cookies etc, and should free up all of the space mentioned.

Thanks Sonic .... I already use Window Washer!!!
So that is why I am wondering whether it really is a temporary file bug

Dave ... Tweak XP adjusts the cache size for me ... could that be a problem?

AS400 is the worst computer system I have EVER used! My ex employer (Medex Assistance) use it and it is SO old. Like using one of those old BBC computers.

Safeway, whist I normally appreciate your opinion, in this case you are talking out of your rectum.

If it was so shit, why does:

Ford
General motors
Marks and Spencers
John Lewis,
95% of the major high street banks
65% of Finance Houses
British Airways
etc etc

....alll run their systems on AS400's and their derivatives. Why...because they are reliable, stable and easy to fix when the go wrong.

After using them for 20 years, I dfo thing I know a bit of what I am talking about here.

Let me guess, you work on a Intel server?

"Have the images loaded successfully? I've had the odd occasion when a JPEG has actually downloaded and been saved as a bitmap. Does his issue happen all the time?

What browser is he using/version?"

Canb you answer this mate and I will keep looking

1. Could try that and see if it works ... and yeah I do get a .BMP option as well but still no good .... will try that tonight!
2. The images appear to load successfully but will not show as a thumbnail even and just an icon, which despite using all types of pic editors they will not display
3. Using AOL and Explorer (most recent version) as my browsers

I've had a nose round Microsoft's help site. Some people seem to suggest it's an AOL thing, and that .ART files are only supported by some outdated applications, but AOL still has a penchant for them for some reason.
Not that this helps solve it, but there you go.

Yeah I could buy that ... but the problem only started about two months ago ... before that it was fine .... thanks anyway, you and Dave have given me a few ideas

start/programmes/accessories/system tools/disk cleanup

usually works for me when I have a problem with things like this.

one thing to check if its down to full temp folders etc.

with browser open check file (on the top tool bar) have you got the option to edit or is it greyed out? if so the temp files need cleaning usually by using above.

Well it woks for me when these little problems occur.
