Goldstone Ground memories

Felt a great attachment to The Goldstone Ground. Don't feel that for The Amex.

That's a shame and I wonder why? Have we/you not witnessed enough emotion there yet? I will never forget the sense of pride and achievement I felt drinking in the Trafalgar on Doncaster day, heading out to the ground and climbing the stairs with my dad to find our seats and stare in wonderment at the pinnacle of one man's ambition and all of our collective hard work over the last 14 years since leaving the Goldstone.

Still got pics of my uncle in the 30's at the goldstone so amex got a long way to go!

The most shocking thing about this is that someone's smuggled a woman in. Disgraceful !
Before you know it they'll be playing the bloody game soon . Oh!

Possibly.

Remember going to my first games in the late 70s. Having a ST in the mid-80s. Goldstone Gaz, Gulls Eye, the Evening Argus seller, Dean Saunders making his debut. Walking past in my lunch break at school. Watching reserve games from the West Stand. Seeing players on their way to/from the ground. Feeling that it was a local's club.

And being able to walk to and from the ground. I know it might seem pathetic to some, but the rigmarole of the journey to and from the ground is really off-putting for me.

Being home in time to see the Classified Results on the TV! Hearing the crowd and the tannoy announcements if not at the game for some reason:ascarf:

Yes. On wet days I used to park in Pembroke Crescent and could get back to my car in time to hear James Alexander Gordon.

It was an embarrassment of a stadium, mocked, as were we, whenever a 'big' team played us. 'Seaweeds'.

Yes of course I loved it at the time, the pipe smoke, the smell of wintergreen wafting off Henderson's magic thighs, the wonder of an evening game....

But we were never premiership ready, not even divison 2 ready. The East stand was roofless. The North was 'taken' by 5 Gillingham one afternoon. The owners were always lacking ambition. The ratty Tory council never supported any half arsed attempt we made to develop the stadium. It was mediocre. It had no future.

Yes, I loved it, but I also had the total lack of ambition of the age, and never questioned it. All my school mates had division one club badged bags to carry their homework back and forth at HGSB. We had no pride for our town (as it was) or our club, just affection. No real passion or belief.

Things are very different now. I love my Amex, my comfy seat, my ambitious and clever club, my hard nut chairman, the future we have.

Goldstone has gone. RIP. But it was very certainly not better back then. To think so is delusional.

the team was though and surely thats what mattered at the time, that team fought their way to the 1st division and a cup final

Must have lost only about 4 home league games in 4 seasons during the late 70's wondering when we will get are first 7-0 or 7-2 victory at the amex?

we will I am sure
when well who knows
maybe if I can get there later in the season it might just bring that bit of luck

My dad says the same about the Amex and various health concerns makes it tough for him to climb the 110 stairs up to the WU where the other 7 of our group sit. (And no he doesn't want us or some of us to move to a lower elevation so it's easier for him.)

The irony being that he grew up in Hodshrove Road Moulescoomb and could've easily walked to the Amex and thought nothing of getting on two buses and a walk to get to the Goldstone and back. Guess the haziness of time made that seem romantic whereas now it just seems like a faff for him. *shrug*

One that sticks in my head is I being a ball boy when I was a kid when that massive protest kicked off with Bellotti and Archer, it was tense as fu*k burning effigies of Archer with arrows going through his head etc and ended with 1000's fans jumping over my head onto the pitch and me being dragged out before being squashed, not so much health and safety in them days lol

I agree with those saying that the mission of getting to our new stadium is a put off, I dread it every week. Yes its a brilliant piece of architecture, but it has no feeling like all new stadiums. And I hate that its in the middle of nowhere, I like stadiums to be in the town/community (like west ham, liverpool, qpr etc and the goldstone etc).

it's funny because when I'm over for a game,I catch the train from Newhaven as I always did back in the Goldstone days

and it's so easy now,no stops and get out right outside the stadium

but I actually used to like all the stop at Brighton then connect to Hove and then the walk up to the ground, superb!

it was the gradual build up to the match I enjoyed, nothing like walking up to an old stadium, seeing the floodlights in the distance

memories of the Goldstone so,so many!

2 that really stick out

sammy morgan sidefooting home from about 4 yards out against palace

and charlie george going straight through on goal, then grummitt saving right from the kick off against derby

as for the Amex, granted I've only been to a handful of games and I was gobsmacked by the size of the west stand, amazing stadium, god bless Mr Bloom
