If Goldson goes then we have to be very careful with regards to making sure we can hit the required 8 homegrown players requirement. With Sidwell and Rosenior both off this summer we already probably need both Walton to be included and Goldson (who was part of the number last year). Can't help but think that this requirement may be impactful to Goldson, Walton and Baldock when perhaps in the past they would have been allowed to expand their game elsewhere for the season, or sold.

Sidwell wasn’t named in the 25 man squad after January transfer window, so wasn’t counting towards the HGP rule anyway. Our current HGPs are Dunk, Duffy, Stephens, Baldock, Krul (assuming he stays), Goldson, March so currently we only need 1 HGP. Walton could make the 8th if we didn’t keep Maenpaa but I think another season on loan for Walton would be more beneficial. I can’t see us even being interested in selling Goldson if we are expecting offers for Dunk. It’s easy to see why there is such a premium attached to English players, or why clubs bring in players from abroad so young so they eventually meet the HGP criteria.

Agreed. I personally wonder where some posters £8m plus valuations come from. Goldson, much as l like him, is a central defender with hardly any Premier League experience.

Totally agree with this. Some people need to take off those blue and white tinted spectacles and look at it the other way. Minimal PL experience, not that much Championship experience, hardly played for two years, known medical condition. If we signed someone for £8m with that background people on here would be going ape about the risk the club was taking.

I Like CG and think he is a good ball playing centre back. However, I do think he is not that dominant in the air and maybe the doesn't fit the clubs profile for a centre back so they are cashing in while they can.

You have lost touch with market valuations... I believe Rangers think they can get him for around £2M... that is taking the p1ss (far too low), as most on here correctly recognise...

Which, as the story goes, is why an aerially powerful centre-back was our top target for us after we came so close to promotion in 2015/16.

These pages were filled with comments about why we were spending so much on Shane Duffy when he signed, including by me probably, but it transpired to be exactly what we needed,

It's worth noting that Rangers' attempt to buy Martin Skrtel has collapsed as their bid is a long way short of Fenerbahce's £5m valuation - the words 'long way' implies to me that they're not offering half. I think that £8m for Goldson is way too high an estimate - my guess is around £3 to 4m. But if Rangers can't even afford that, I can't see him going in a hurry.

Scottish blogger John James (who is normally very well informed about things Ibrox related) suggests that Gerrard is about to walk, having been sold a pup that's "shitting all over the Blue Room and pissing in The Loving Cup." Things aren't looking good up there in Monkey Tennis Land.

I'm a bit surprised we are trying to keep Maaenpa for this reason. I'd have thought the easiest way to start bulking up your HGPs is by snapping up an old, past it English goalkeeper who will be quite happy to see out his career as our third choice with no prospect of playing in exchange for another year of wages. Everyone's a winner. For us, it's a HGP who is relatively cheap and comes with no expectation of playing. For the player, it's another year of money in the PL with no playing ambitions left to fulfil.

Joe Hart perhaps?

For Goldson, it's a good move since he would be first choice CB and you would think that he'd be on at least the same money that he's on at Albion.

He probably fancies the move but I can't see Rangers meeting our valuation.

From a Shrews supporting chum he informs me Goldsons fee was 800k plus 300k first team appearance certain number of matches add on , he failed to hit this target due to his heart problem so this add on apparently has not yet been released to Shrewsbury , we probably re negotiated a deal with the Shrews after Connor was diagnosed with the heart problem . Not a player i would let go , if it wasn't for the Dunk and Duffy duo he would of played a hell of a lot more in the premiere league , madness to now sell him but i agree on a loan deal somewhere now we have signed Baloo , Rangers is a bad move for him imo he needs to be playing against tougher opposition than who they come up against , recall loan yes , sale Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.
