The trouble I have is that people with beliefs don't leave others alone.

I don't believe in god, yet for instance at school it was the law to have a collective act of (Christian) worship every day.

And I promised myself not to get involved..... that's simply not true Highfield. In all groups, whether it be religion or football supporters it is the vocal/agressive minority who give everyone else a bad name. Most christians, muslims, buddhists etc spend every day of their lives keeping their religions to themselves. everyone is entitled to a belief provided it doesn't hurt others. And in most cases it is not a religion that is evil... it's what human beings do with it.

That final sentence, in way is how I see it..... gods creates contexts, we create events and the repercussions. Don't blame god, blame people.

Hi Sully, I agree with your point. I think I badly phrased my original post - I wasn't trying to imply that all, or even most, people with belief try to impose them on others as in my experience this really isn't the case.

I guess my bugbear is when religion is allowed to influence the workings of the state in such a way that the state tries to enforce religion on people whether they want it or not.

Dan Brown, author of the Da Vinci Code? Don't know the quote but halfway through reading the book. Best book I've read in years, i wonder just how much truth there is in some of the theories put forward, even if it is a work of fiction?

A work of fiction what like the bible?

Highfield... totally agree....

Which people? Good question. Firstly, did people in Pakistan prepare for an obvios earyquake zone by building good infrastructure? No, they spent it on egttign rich and buying weapons so that the innocnet suffered. Who created the scale of tyhe disaiter then? Humans. Why are we having drastic changes in oureco-sphere... because of polution... created by.... humans. Why are so many poeple dying now froms eemingly small injuries or malnutrition because the right help isn't getting to them.... human failure. It's so easy to pass the buck and blame it on an entity that may or may not exist... I am not making an argument for god... I am making an argumnent that this has nothing to do with whether god exists or not.

So the religious apologists seem to be saying... Look, earthquakes happen and it's not God's fault. It's our responsibility to deal with the risks, and the consequences.

Yep. A perfect explanation of the atheist viewpoint.

It's only when you start trying to find some place for God in the story that you get embarrassing contradictions about this omniscient, yet curiously sadistic, or plainly useless Superman.

Far easier to conclude that the old bastard doesn't exist. And that the ancients must have just made him up. Then get on with preparing better for natural disasters in future.
