Played well? If that's good I'd hate to see bad!

He made couple of good saves to his credit. Can forgive the one hospital pass as nothing came of it, and goals 1 & 4, he couldn't do much about.

Goal 2 from Lukaku, yes it was caused primarily first by a Dunk mistake, but his positioning is wrong as Lukaku moved across, he left a huge gap at near post, and then with out stretched leg, he moves wrong way, body/torso facing other side and trying to stop with trailing leg.

3rd goal he seemed to dive under it? When the out stretched leg there may have stopped it?

Don't get me wrong, we didn't lose tonight because of Steele, team was poor and player mistakes, but I'm not sure you can argue Steele has played well?

Not directed solely at you, but since it’s a directly reply I’ll just vent here.

I’m kinda over this armchair assassination of Jason Steele.

Sure, he’s no Buffon. He’s had his critics his whole career.

If anyone knows the journey of JS then, especially as a Brighton fan, we should all be proud of his rise of status. I think he’ll be replaced, sure, eventually. We should back him if he plays.

But unless people are goalkeeping coaches I’m not having it. Steele didn’t have a bad game last night. If we want to micro analyse people’s performances then there’s other places to be looking. It’s an easy out to point fingers at any keeper when a team is haemorrhaging goals but the fact is there are institutional flaws in De Zerbismo that need addressing.

You might be right, I might be wrong, but I cbf to dissect the angle of Steeles dive for a goal that came from a sloppy set piece or his positioning when his only covering centre back effectively puts him clean thru on goal.

It was a traumatic night last night. lol. Let’s try to move on. 👍 I’m sure the players feel like crap this morning, particularly Jason and Lewis.

Listen that first goal he's rounded a prime me at secondary school. BUT it was a one-on-one with Diabala and no defender anywhere near him. What keepers would prevent a goal there?

The second goal he was beaten at his near post like prime me at secondary school. BUT it was Lukaku in a one on one, on his left foot and he could have gone either side. What keeper stops a goal there?

The third goal his positioning was pretty good but he looked really awkward. He might have saved that with his feet possibly?. BUT two Roma players unmarked at the back post would usually result in a goal either way.

The fourth goal there were two Roma players unmarked at the back post which will usually result in a goal.

I don't think Steele should be our goalkeeper. But we could have had Ederson in goal last night and we'd still have lost 4-0.
And this is the biggest issue with Steele. There’s never any expectations that he makes saves.

And I disagree on goals 1-3. A good level Prem keeper saves at least 1 of these, probably 2 in some games. We’ve got so used to Steele being this standard now, whilst opposition keepers regularly make saves like these against us, that all objectivity about him is lost in a bid by some to protect him.

This is fair and rational. But he’s one of those players that’s had the faith 100% put in him, despite regularly underachieving. As a result, any analysis of De Zerbismo needs to include an analysis of Steele (as well as injuries, his lack of flexibility etc).

I'd agree with that.

I think a major dilemma some may face is feeling they're being too hard on one of the nicest fellas in the squad.

Jason Steele is an absolute gent, all round top bloke with an amazing back story. I'd guess everybody would want him to be a success for all of those reasons.

But that has to be separated from ability as a top 10 PL keeper.
There is that, yes, but I'd also add that in some quarters it's going WAY too far. The fact that he's being scapegoated by many really doesn't sit right for me. Given how dreadfully he was treated by Sunderland fans, I really don't like how some Brighton fans are walking down the same path

Do I think Verbruggen should have started last night? Yes. Do I think Verbruggen starting would have fixed our complete defensive failure? No.

Is Steele the reason we lost last night? No. I don't think you can blame a goalkeeper (whoever it is) when you set up to play as suicidally as we did last night (and vs. Fulham) in defence.

I adore RDZ, but I think last night shows that he has a long way to go before he's a top, top coach, in my opinion. All we had to do, was keep it tight in the away leg and not get overrun and we were so wide open that we were sadly never really in the tie. Roma played it like a two-leg tie, we played it like a one-off cup semi.

That said, this is a new experience for us as a club. He' still developing as a manager and we will make mistakes. Unfortunately, last night was one of them and learning from it will be massive.

Steele didn’t do anything wrong last night. He was completely let down by Van Hecke, Igor and particularly Dunk who were all absolutely shocking.
Your expectation of our goalkeeper is so incredibly low that any saves are championed and the goals are never his fault because he's not good enough to make saves anyway. Our expectations should be higher of our #1.

The only reason imo to run our lads down is if they are not giving 100%. They are and they always have. Can't fault the effort that the lads put in. I will still be renewing my season ticket if or when we slip down into the lower divisions. I will still cherish the memories of our time at the top with the big boys

Or if they're obviously nowhere near good enough for the standard of the team. Rubbish players are always called out, it's always been the case and always will be. Right now we have the best squad we've ever had and may ever have so the standard is higher than Damian Hilton but the point remains - someone costing the team will always attract ire, especially if it's a goalie and even more so if their incompetence is costing the team game in game out. Steele out.

WARNING Tongue in cheek post 🙂

Yep - crap goal keeping not to save an incredible, first class header from Kevin de Bruyne into the the top right corner. Then of course Barco being caught in possession on the edge of the box - Steele really should take flak for that. The free kick that led to Foden’s goal shouldn’t have been given but it was a great free kick, awkward ball and went in off the deflection. Steele should have beaten Walker to the ball before Alvarez tapped in the fourth but Walker looked like he fouled Steele to me.

EDIT - For the dense and slow to catch on - that was all tongue in cheek - Steele couldn’t have done anything about the first 3 goals and was fouled on the fourth.

I'm assuming the posters here are on a wind up or didn't watch the game

The only mistake he made was not feigning injury when walker fouled hin.
I was being sarcastic - did you read my whole post ?

Makes you wonder just how bad Bart must have been to lose his place

Learn the lesson Roberto, put Bart back and leave him there
