Tonight is not 100% on Steele but for the 2nd he has to do better, he may still not save it, but with what he did he may as well of walked off the pitch. Reminded me of an outfield player going in goal. I had zero confidence he’d do anything. I don’t think his defenders have any confidence in him. He is also starting to lose a growing section of our fans.

For me RDZ has to now make Bart his no1 for the rest of this season. If he struggles then we know we need to address it this summer.
While I’m at it I’d start Baleba next to Gilmour next week and play Gross as the 10. We need a 10 with guile and control and we need more energy and bite next to Gilmour. Enciso is miles off it at the moment.
The defence were shit and if you know how goalkeeping is trained that is how they are taught to go down for the 2nd goal. Blaming Steele is crazy. Blame dunk, he was useless, but his control for the 2nd goal was perfect !

Ha ha ha. Who the hell are you David Stockdale? He didn’t move off his line, Lukuku is not central and if you want to get technical then he’s actually been beaten at his near post. He is so out of his depth it’s scary, he cost us the the FA Cup tie and he did nothing to help tonight. It’s not his fault, he should not be anywhere near no1 for a side in the top 6 and he should not be starting in a R16 match in the UEL, but that is on our manager and not Steele, I have no idea what the f*** RDZ is doing at the moment with the keepers.

Clueless response.

You know that two things can be true at once, right?

Left a pretty big gap at his near post for the second goal, dived over the ball for the third.
Second goal was pathetic, how Lakku scores to the left of Steele is bewildering he didn’t narrow the angle he found himself

All of this, we have lost before kick off with him in goal as proved from the last three games.

I wish they’d announce the team a few hours before KO as I’m usually at the ground when I see his name come up and too late to sit the game out.
Can you get a phone signal sufficient to put a bet on the opposition to score 2+ goals?

Steele has played well. Can’t do much when you’ve been sold out by the ppl in front of you.

Dunk has been abysmal.
Played well? If that's good I'd hate to see bad!

He made couple of good saves to his credit. Can forgive the one hospital pass as nothing came of it, and goals 1 & 4, he couldn't do much about.

Goal 2 from Lukaku, yes it was caused primarily first by a Dunk mistake, but his positioning is wrong as Lukaku moved across, he left a huge gap at near post, and then with out stretched leg, he moves wrong way, body/torso facing other side and trying to stop with trailing leg.

3rd goal he seemed to dive under it? When the out stretched leg there may have stopped it?

Don't get me wrong, we didn't lose tonight because of Steele, team was poor and player mistakes, but I'm not sure you can argue Steele has played well?

The blame should definitely be directed at RDZ. Steele is a professional and is no doubt giving his best, but his best is the level of a back-up keeper and he should not be regularly being put in the firing line when we've got a bloke on the bench who's being selevted for a top-10-ranked international team. The back end of last season seems to have been a purple patch in his career - although there were some mediocre performances in there as well. However he's going to be a mental wreck by the end of this season.

I mean what is the point in spending 20m on a keeper and benching him for more than half our games? May as well have sent him on loan to the Championship to get some consistent game time.

No mention of Dunk shitting the bed constantly to give Roma these chances ?

Listen that first goal he's rounded a prime me at secondary school. BUT it was a one-on-one with Diabala and no defender anywhere near him. What keepers would prevent a goal there?

The second goal he was beaten at his near post like prime me at secondary school. BUT it was Lukaku in a one on one, on his left foot and he could have gone either side. What keeper stops a goal there?

The third goal his positioning was pretty good but he looked really awkward. He might have saved that with his feet possibly?. BUT two Roma players unmarked at the back post would usually result in a goal either way.

The fourth goal there were two Roma players unmarked at the back post which will usually result in a goal.

I don't think Steele should be our goalkeeper. But we could have had Ederson in goal last night and we'd still have lost 4-0.

I'd agree with that.

I think a major dilemma some may face is feeling they're being too hard on one of the nicest fellas in the squad.

Jason Steele is an absolute gent, all round top bloke with an amazing back story. I'd guess everybody would want him to be a success for all of those reasons.

But that has to be separated from ability as a top 10 PL keeper.

He is a funny keeper, Steele. He makes some good saves but for me he concedes a lot of goals that would be harsh to say were his fault, but that a top-class keeper would probably save. He's great with his feet, but if you look at the levels of some of our players (Dunk, Mitoma, Gross etc) then he is just nowhere near as good as them in his position. He's 33 now and he has had a decent run as a Premier League keeper which he fully deserved, but I really think it's time to make Verbruggen Number 1 and give him a proper run of games. He can be a top class keeper in a few years time, so we should be investing the time in him now. If Steele is happy to stick around and play number 2 then brilliant, he's the perfect man for that. If he wants to go and play his last couple of seasons in the Championship as number 1 then we should help facilitate that too.

I hope so.

RDZ has rotated as a strategy to cope with the increased number of games.
It hasn't worked, mainly because of injuries.

Regardless of that, we need some consistency in the team now.
Either to build for next season, or sneak into the europa conference league.
I don't think the GK rotation has anything to additional fixtures - keepers don't get tired - so I'm sceptical as to whether Bart is going to get a decent run of games going into the last quarter of the season. There's a reason that every other team sticks with one man for every game with the back-up only playing in less important cup games to keep match sharpness in case he's called on, and that is fairly rare.
