Does this stuff actually kill weeds? Well, if it does and Brighton doesn't want it, please send a couple of barrels of the stuff this way, as I can guarantee from bitter experience that the stuff they sell in B&Q and/or the local garden centres kills bugger all!

It's Roundup and it does work, but for more vigorous shrubs and small trees a stronger mix is required.

It certainly does - used it for years.

It can be a good two or three weeks before you see anything happening but it totally kills anything it is sprayed on in my experience.

In my defence, I was left unsupervised.

and see post #53. You've made quite a jump there imho! I'm in the group, attended a two hour training session (which will be a h&s/risk assessment/insurance requirement of the modern world) and, if I want to I can complete an online form when I do an independent tidy up (however, I prefer to join the group ones, of which the one's I've attended have never been in a park or public gardens btw. I'm not convinced timbha knows what they are talking about...).
Ok, fair enough, like I say I didn't know such a group existed, the only group of people I've seen out and about doing 'public spirited' stuff like that are the Friends of Hollingbury and Burstead Woods.

So why haven't you been weeding the streets then? (Anyway, well done for what you do).

I can’t let this throw away comment at the end of your factual post go without challenge. Which part of my well intended posts are incorrect?

To add some context…. Admittedly it was a few years ago but I signed up for the Tidy Up Group when a volunteer was canvassing at Withdean Park. I genuinely thought there would be action days/target areas etc and we could just turn up, grab a plastic bag and fill it up with rubbish, weeds, etc.
Soon after I was contacted asking if I would join a committee, help write a Terms of Reference for the group, attend training, complete a risk assessment, provide details of my health, plus, plus. At that point I decided that it wasn’t for me and would prefer just to pick up rubbish as and when I saw it.

I appreciate the Council has to go through these hoops to protect itself but it wasn’t something I wanted to get involved in.

Well done for volunteering and participating in such a great scheme. Out of interest which sites have you helped to tidy?

I may not know what I’m talking about since then.

Genuine question - what do the rest of Europe do if glyphosate is banned? And (less genuine question), how do they manage to get anything done whilst tripping over weeds all the time?

Community spirited residents and councils spend time clearing without spraying everything in sight.

To inform the NSC residents of B & H that maybe we might see and end to the weeds at last 😉
You could stop all the weeds in Brighton by nuking the city , works but not necessarily a good way to do it.

Personally wouldn't put it in my garden and don't like the idea of it being used nearby.

I know there are people on here who have a different opinion but it's not for me.

Fair enough.
I use Roundup when required, usually in the spring in between paving slabs etc.
The landscape gardener who has been doing some work for us, on and off for a year or so, has also used it to clear weeded areas before planting.

Apols for my rudeness. Sounds like that was the beginning of the group if you were asked to join a committee and write terms, fair enough, it's up and running ok now. As for the rest, it sounds like you weren't wanting to commit /couldn't be arsed (which is your perogative). I've helped tidy Lewes Rd, Ditchling Rd, 7 Dials, Whitehawk Hill, Preston Circus, the flytip site by the allotments behind the cemetry (twice! Won't be doing it again after tweeking my back and since it just reappears because the council don't fence it off) and Pavilion Gardens behind the cafe numerous times (again, won't be doing it again because the street bums use it as a toilet, fill it with rubbish again within a week and leave knives and bolt cutters in there and I'm sick of working in such a skanky area). I've also done solo picks (which are encouraged) but fed up with negative comments by the public "you should leave that to the council", "what crime have you done", "you're wasting your time" blah blah blah. The fact is, the general public doesn't like paying tax.... but then is surprised that the council budget doesn't stretch much to such things as weeding, fly picking, graffiti and litterpicking. People moan but do feck all themselves, is the crux of the matter. "Leave it, someone else will do it". Well, actually, leave it and it will stay as it is. Those council workers who try v hard to do a good job are over run because the public drops shit everywhere and refuses to tidy up the patch by their own home/business. As for the OP, I would agree with a balance of weed killers, paid manual workers, volunteers and general public but this is unlikely.

Many local authorities especially Germany burn the weeds off , although not entirely effective on perennial weeds with tap roots it’s considered more environmentally friendly
For those folk worried about being in contact with such chemicals and others might be worth a look at what they treat potato haulm with prior to harvest
Shop purchased weed killers are now considerably weaker than in the past so less effective.
A salt and vinegar mix works well for home use but still be careful with pets till it’s been rained on

I’ve been solo litter picking for years, never received one negative comment.
