looks like he's got off (no pun intended)

The disgraced rock star Gary Glitter paid more than £2,000 to the families of two under-age Vietnamese girls he is accused of sexually abusing, it was reported today.
Glitter gave £1,100 each to the families of the 11 and 12-year-old girls he allegedly had sex with, his lawyer said.

Last week, both families were reported to have written letters to the court asking for the case against the 70s' star to be dropped.

The reported payments are equivalent to around three times the average annual wage in Vietnam.

"If we pay the money for the two families, when this case goes to court maybe Mr Gary will receive a lighter penalty," Glitter's attorney, Le Thanh Kinh, said.

"After receiving the money, they informed the investigation bureau that they don't want to go to court and they want to drop the case."

The defendant is Paul Gadd - GG's real name ....

Rape carries a "death by firing squad" punishment. The plantiffs have now dropped this charge and the police have issued a statement saying they do not have enough evidence now to bring this charge. Not heard whether there will be a lesser charge or if he will be set free now ....

Blood money payments are quite common across countries/cultures.

Couldnt agree more. The man is absolute scum and how he has managed to escape from this disgusts me.

I would LOVE IT if one of the tabloids offered the families more money and they went back on their word and he did end up in the shit.

So, looney, Watford O and enigma, we go for the best legal system that money can buy?

The concept of justice varies but it usually contains the idea of retribution. If the victim and the victims family are happy with that who is an ivory tower socialist to object?

Our system is flawed because retribution seems to be dumped, ie no consideration for the victims financial or otherwise.

Will the authorities in Vietnam expel him from their country after the trial if he is cleared or allow him to stay to continue his depravities.

Some systems of justice have a built in mechanism that "encourages" victims and their families to express themselves "happy" that state intervention would be inappropriate.

Western Sicily was a good example, until the ivory tower socialists came along with their politically correct nonsense and put the mafia out of business.

Thought that was Musolini and his ivory tower facists.

Fair comment.

However, it all went pearshaped after the war, when the American forces occupying Sicily looked to establish "democratic" government and turned to the local leaders who had been locked up by Mussolini for "opposing the fascist regime".

It took thirty years for the post-war Italian state to rid Sicilian government of mafia influence.

I'm sure that, these days, the Americans are MUCH better at establishing democratic structures in countries that they occupy.

???

Gary Glitter should be allowed to leave Vietnam on the proviso that his genitalia remains as recompense to the families involved. The removal of his genitals should be done with a rusty meat cleaver.

Paul Gadd should be locked up and the key thrown away, plane and simple. He is sick in the head.

I'm not certain that Scilian or indeed the entire Italian government is rid/has ever been/ever will be rid of mafia influence?
