most fans see shepherd as the problem rather than the manager

despite not being very good, roeder was fairly popular

oh, and it depends on how you define "big club" BG, how many sides would get 50,000 all season when placed 13th?

My definition of a big club is one that wins trophies and gets the support and can compete in the transfer market for the best players.

The support at Newcastle may be great but that is where it stops.

Yep. Spot on.

I'm going to say that I thought Glenn Roeder was actually a bit of a twat. Really rated himself, when in reality he did a shit job, even allowing for injuries. I remember him having a sly dig at O'Neill for not being brave enough to take the job. prat..

He did spend 1a fair whack last summer. Also showed himself to be short sighted- why buy Duff when you have a perfectly good winger in N'Zogbia and your defence is pants? Why buy Martins when he is a reasonably similar player to Owen?

He didnt even try to get the best out of Luque, a man that has scored various important goals in the Champ League against the likes of Milan and Juventus, choosing Sibierski over him.
:dunce:

Huh? That doesn't make much sense either enigma - you can't question the wisdom of buying decent players for a top club that already has decent players. If Newcastle are going to compete in a league that has a bar raised by United, Liverpool and Chelsea (whose reserves are all top notch) then you need depth. That also proved wiser still, once Owen got injured. What would they have done without Martins??

Having said that, his tactical acumen might be the suspect point, plus player respect.
He is, after all, a bit nerdy for a man-manager and a leader. O'Neill has a certain nerdyness too, but his leadership is known to be strong. Coppell is so quiet, shy and retiring in his manner, it's a wonder that he has turned out such a good manager - but I think his players know he has a brilliant tactical mind and knowledge of the opposition.

Shepherd may still be seen as a problem because of their history since sacking Sir Bobby Robson.

Duff is a top player, but why buy a left winger when you already have a decent one, especially when they needed defenders more than anything. Their midfield isnt the area that has held them back, it's the defence, so why spend £5m and 70,000 on Duff when they already had a good winger who's also younger?

Martins is a good player and has done well, but he's fairly similar in style to Owen. Would he not have been better off getting someone else, thinking long term, unless they plan to get rid of one of them this summer? Having said that, they will probably end up doing alright together now. :dunce:

The Martins comparison does depend on assuming Owen ever really becomes reliably fit again, sadly.

Do wonder how many more sackings/enforced-resignations Shepherd believes he has in him, before the really very odd economics of Newcastle's approach force him to accept a buy-out. The amount they're willing to offer in transfer fees and wages, gazumping (and why not?) other comparable clubs, is quite something, but the debt they're building up with oh-so-friendly banks and building societies does surely require at least one trophy some time soon, surely...?

I couldn't agree more about their defence, as it is rather crap. That they bolstered other areas isn't a problem as I see it though - they needed help in those departments too.
The problem is that they do have the right quality to compete in the Prem.... in certain positions. The other positions are comparitively woeful, more like 1st division abilities.

It is a problem though if you only have a certain amount of cash, surely?

I dont really think they had a problem there- N'Zogbia is decent, Emre can play on the left and Milner has played there as well. Sure, Duff is better than all of those, but as I said £5m would have been better spent on a defender- Lescott for example.

N'Zogbia has looked promising, but has had a poor season and seems to have fallen out with Roeder - if a new manager (whoever he may be, arf) can get him motivated again, all to the good for them, but they may feel tempted to cash in now if he looks too much of a mardy trouble-maker behind the scenes.

Newcastle buy a decent defender any time soon? Nah, that's just crazy talk.
They got a good price for Woodgate at the time, but must be kicking themselves now, at least not to have got some kind of preferential buy-back treatment.
£7m is a dead-on steal for 'Boro, especially considering what prices the likes of Davies for West Brom or indeed Upson might command this summer.

There was talk that no money actually changed hands when Owen went to Newcastle as Real Madrid owed them that money on the Woodgate deal so a buy back would have been out of the question
