Forgive me if im wrong (as you would know better than me) but when they were in what is now the championship, the wernt gettin a quarter of that figure were they? johhny come latelys.

that was when attendances were nationally quite low, so a bit unfair to judge them on that

the fact that they've been lower mid table for quite some years, yet STILL get over 50,000 every game would suggest that they're a pretty big club

with a good manager, i'm sure they'll be challenging for the league in no time

Is he the most boring man in the world?

Yes. Listening to him on MOTD was absolutely turgid, he's the human equivalent of wallpaper. He just fades into the background. His voice is utterly dull and he comes across as having no charisma whatsover.

He always stood on MOTD saying "I'm not going to make excuses...", which was then followed by a list of excuses, usually injury related. Yes, Shearer retired, yes Owen got injured, but what's that got to do with Newcastle's unfailingly shit defence?

How does Owen's knee surgery impact on Titus Bramble's complete inability to clear the simplest cross, or Stephen Carr's terrible passing?

I know Steve Coppell sounds dull on TV, but you always feel he's got conviction beneath the calm exterior and that must transmit to his players. Whereas listening to Glenn Roeder speak, I always felt that even he didn't have any confidence in what he was doing, and how are you supposed to tell players on £60k a week what to do in that case?

I can't understand how it hasn't occurred to a single Newcastle manager in years to start from the back, build a decent defence, and THEN worry about adding flair and goals. You have to wonder whether it comes down to Freddie Shepherd and the board, pressurising the bosses to buy flashy forwards to impress the fans, when what the fans really want is a winning team, even if it means getting a solid defence together first.

...and their timeless ability to appoint comically shit managers?

Last summer they could have taken their pick from O'Neill, Hiddink, Coppell, Boothroyd etc and they picked Roeder.

Names currently in the frame...

Les Reed
Steve Claridge
Glenn Hoddle
Roy Evans
Brian Kerr
Niall Quinn
Mark McGhee
Martin Hinshelwood

Next up- Graham Rix, perhaps? Or Ron Atkinson? I can see him getting on splendidly with Shepherd, both have such world renowned PR abilities.

Personally I think they should give the job to Barry Fry.

Massive comedy value, historically a complete disaster area when given lots of money to spend, and concentrates entirely on strikers at the expense of his usually woeful defence, resulting in calamitous 7-4 defeats to relegation bound opponents.

In short, utterly perfect for Newcastle United.

I always forget about Rix. I love the optimism implicit in his applying for every job there is. One day he'll get an interview and it will be game on.

Unfortunately the League Managers' Association site has got rid of its 'seeking work' section, which read like a personality graveyard.

Exactly, a man like Barry Fry needs to be a proper manager again!
