Can someone explain the Glastonbury hype? I've been once about 20 years ago, thought it was ok.... But really a bunch of middle class white people camping in a field , off their tits on all kind of substances is not my idea of fun. And it seems like the crowd gets older every year.


I'm going to see sza and sampha tonight in Hyde park, it might be glasto lite but feels a lot more appealing, and I can walk home !

I would say anyone who doesn't use a backing track but that would narrow the field somewhat.

Having read your various posts about all manner of things from Berlin to Munich to Ibiza to Glastonbury I get the feeling, that whilst you seemingly try your hardest, you never quite know where the party actually is.

Watched a little bit of the coverage last night.

Definitely not my genre of music but how are D Block Europe so popular? Very bad rapping while using auto tune to make it sound like studio outtakes from Cher’s Believe recordings. Had to get my daughter to confirm that it wasn’t a mickey take.

I said to the missus 'Lipa looks like she's mi....' but was shouted down. Using a backing track would explain it. The lips and the sound largely didn't synch. I remember seeing a clip of Madge and it looked like she was miming too. I don't object to a backing track, especially given that a lot of artists record a double track vocal on much of their studio stuff. Peter Hammill of Vandergraaf Generator was doing it in the 70s. I think the problem with Lipa is that she isn't all that good.

I listen to BBC6 everyday and am sick of Glastonbury this and Glastonbury that fgs. Everywhere I go all I see and hear is that living hell. The last concert I went to was the last Jam concert at the Brighton Centre a few years ago.
I love Deadletter, Sprintz, Idles, English Teacher, CMAT etc but am made to feel I’m a second class citizen because I HATE festivals.
Am I alone ? Rant over.

No. I went to Reading in 75, and saw Guns 'n Roses and The Cult at Donnington in the 90s. I found the general experience horrible. The crowds, the 'facilities' and most of the people. Mrs T persuaded me to go to Wide Awake in Brockwell Park last year. That was a fabulous day. Lots of space, no hoards of dick heads, nice friendly people wanting to chat with me about The Albion (I had an Albion shirt on). We saw Molchat Doma, A Place to Bury Strangers and Lebananon Hanover. It was sunny but unseasonably cold, with plenty of room for an Old Man to have a sit down. The concessions were accessible and reasonably priced. Magical.

The idea of camping, and being in a crowd of tens of thousands, with all those soppy flags (I laughed when Idles made them put them away) and the general milling around waiting between acts would have me in a right old state. I need to feel in control of my environment. I'd have a face like a smacked arse. So in general I hate 'festivals' too, but really enjoy watching decent sets on the tellybox, like Idles yesterday.

She sings over a backing track that contains her vocals so sometimes she is singing live, sometimes she isn't - it would be extremely difficult to sing properly whilst dancing like she does. It is prolific nowadays as it adds to the live experience apparently but if people enjoy it then fine. Makes them look very silly when it goes wrong though!

Yes, as I say, it wouldn't bother me, and the main thing about Lipa is her voice is bland.

I'm not into the grandpa parties like you big boy! I will be there in Ibiza , mykky and just back from st Tropez like every summer, going to the best clubs and after parties like I always do.

And as a clue I will more likely be at the kave than with you at pikes.

A lovely day yesterday.

I do a driving job for West Holts during the festival, and yesterday’s shift started at 5 and finished at 12.30.

We then headed up to The Park for Barry Can’t Swim. Superb set, danced solidly for an hour. He made me cry (I am embarrassingly emotional at times…).

After this we went for a wander - saw loads of interesting acts in interesting venues before heading to the Pyramid for PJ Harvey.

We got right to the front - she was great - theatrical and powerful.

We stayed where we were as the hordes descended for LCD Soundsystem, including @jackalbion and his flag about ten yards behind us. LCD were just incredible. What a spiritual experience. Life affirming. I have wanted to see them for years, and my God, they didn’t disappoint. Wonderful.

We then wandered again, saw a bit of Kate Nash which was fun. By this time we were flagging…couldn’t face the walk up to Park for Fontaines, so returned to West Holts for Jungle - a truly euphoric set.

Then bed. We watched the throngs of youngsters headed for naughty corner and wished we were decades younger.

Shift today is from 8pm to 3am.

I've also really tried with LCD Soundsystem down the years, owned a couple of albums, including Sound of Silver, and while a couple of tracks are good, they are way overhyped imho.

I’m a huge LCD fan, have pretty much everything they’ve recorded and seen them in Brighton, London, Glasto, Ibiza and Berlin at various stages of their/his career. They’re one of a few credible electronic “rock” bands imho, lyrically smart and witty and I like James Murphy’s schtick. As the BBC said, they pulled yesterday’s set from the emotional end of their oeuvre, which was a master stroke.

James Murphy’s musings on Facebook are entertaining as well.

I would have loved to have been there last night.
